Make the 8 is trent safe

Say we figure entrenched in the 8 come finals time , is trent barrett safe to see out his contract and get an extension? At the moment id say its a fair bet he'll be around for a while . Seems to have support of the players and its definitely showing on the field at the moment. After his initial first year , he probably felt like it was 5 years thrown into one but has survived and came out the other side. So to me i dont think changing a coach again through panic would be the right answer after what trent has had to endure. Your thoughts please friends.

If he gets close we should keep him.
As long as the team keeps playing the style and committed way they are they can't not make the 8 anyway.
But we need some certainty and any coach that can get the team to commit to defence like he has is worth keeping.

Interesting question, I was contemplating something similar today.
I think a better way to look at it, is not what outcome is required for Trent to stay but instead a better question to ask, I think is.

"What will constitute success for us this year?"

For mine we have to make the 8, if we make the 8 that is improvement in the right direction, success to me would be top 4 or making second week of finals. Absolute success is a premiership but I am not hoping for that right now

Yer spot on mate , i think the 8 is a must anything higher will be great and really not out of reach if and if things keep rolling along the way they are .

I reckon he'll be safe (chose that option in that poll awhile back as well.)

The players really seem to like him.

But as we know... It's a results driven business. 😛

After all the recent upheaval I'd like to see the club back Trent and let him get on with doing his job. I do believe he has what it takes and hopefully he's with us for an extended period of time.
Here's my little rant.
As long as I can remember Manly has continued to rise above the haters because we've always had this incredible internal self reliance and belief that no other club has ever been able to successfully duplicate.

Growing up I marvelled at men like Ken Arthurson, you always had the feeling he would almost rather die than do or say anything detrimental towards the club.

In the last 18 months I was concerned the club was developing a culture where egos and vendettas had become more important than our welfare and our future.
Thankfully it's starting to feel as if commonsense will win out in the end !

I said before that I thought if we lost the first 7 rounds he was a goner ... well we are 3 (good) wins from 5 .... there has been a marked improvement we are showing cohesion & ticker and I think if we continue along this path not only will he be safe but he'll be offered an extension next year if not sooner

Who would you replace her him with anyway now Des and Ivan are locked into their clubs?

Definitely worth keeping him and if we can spend our full cap next year watch out

Good point about the cap, We essentially boxing with one hand tied behind our back this year.

I believe this is why we swapped Buhrer for Uate and Siro. We will have to start paying more for those 2 next year.

I don't agree that he needs to make the 8 to keep his job. The team is still young and the depth isn't there that a couple of injuries could skittle the season. I think if he can maintain the commitment from the players and compete week in, week out, he will be there next year.

If he wants to be with the club beyond 2018 he needs to make the 8 next year. Making the 8 this season will mean little if he doesn't in 2018.

Also, who else is there if the club does cut ties. Des has resigned with the dishlickers and Ivan is with the Tigpies. I would suggest we would then be in the running for a coach who gets the sack (why would you want them) or another rookie / inexperienced coach.

Whilst 3 games do not make a coaching career, he has shown the ability to get the players playing for each other. If he can maintain that through the year then he is in good stead for 2018 when we will have $1mil in additional cap space to play with.

Yeah agreed, if Baz makes the 8 he deserves to be here next season.

Given where we have been the last couple of seasons, a finals appearance is the path to recovery. You wouldn't cut a coach that is showing significant improvement. (13th to 8th+ is significant improvement).

If he doesn't make the finals, I imagine he will be shown the door.

I would argue he needs to improve on last year and make the finals in 2018 to keep his job. Otherwise the club will move on. The finals are not the be all and end all this season. They would be a bonus but I would suggest he stays if he finished 10th or above.
