Mid-season signing targets

Given we are probably light on up front and appears we will lose Darcy we probably need to sign at least one forward to complete our roster.

Assuming one spot goes to Moses Suli I’d like to see the final two spots to be filled by the below possibilities (in order).

Josh Papali (perhaps raiders would pay part of his contract)
Todd Carney
Suaia Matagi
Willis Meehan (if NRL will clear)
Dave Taylor
Suaso Sue
Tim Grant
Luke Page
Nathaniel Neale

Thoughts or additions?

I haven't heard of those last two on your list. Of the others I'd forget Dave Taylor and Tim Grant.
Blake Austin is another to add to the list of possibles.

This might jog your memory re Page

Nathaniel Neale is playing good footy in the twilight years of his career in Q cup and would be very cheap.

In regards to Austin I don’t think he fits into our team. Wouldn’t work with DCE. Would be a great utility player in the 14 but think Hastings/Carney fits the puzzle better in terms of a starting 6. (I’m in the Croker not up to the job camp)

Agree totally.

Not sure why Austin's name keeps popping up in threads. He recently rejected a 700k a year deal with the Raiders because he wants more money and is on the nose with a few people down there.

The only reason we weren't deducted competition points after the cap scandal is because we let Green go and didn't sign his replacement. That means we won't have the coin to sign anyone on anything but a cut price deal to finalise our 30 man squad.

Unless you're talking a 200k contract tops, forget about it. We don't have the cap space now and we won't have it next year as we battle to re-sign what we've already got.

If Manly are going to dig themselves out of a whole, it's gonna take great coaching of an average squad because it'll be a few years before we even have a chance to assemble something considered to be a top squad.

Next year we shouldn’t re-sign Uate, Croker or Brown and elevate cheapies in Suli, Fainu and Metcalf. We should also release Lussick and that combined will give us roughly 800k to play with to purchase 2 players.

Darcy is on about $400k from memory, Uate was $500k at Newcastle but we were carrying around $250-300k. You’d assume Brown would be on $300-350k, and Suli, Fainu would come in on $100k. Metcalf and Croker would be a straight swap $ wise.

That leaves roughly $800k to replace Lussick and bring in a 5/8 if one is available. According to Gorman we are $350k under the cap for next year and we have a $330k cap reduction penalty - leaving us $20k in the black as our starting position. The issue would be re-signing others to upgrades like Api and Siro.

So basically I take it back - we’re stuffed.

Matagi and Sue are the only ones on that list we'd look at, hopefully. One of them would suit.
For the final 2 spots, it would be ideal if Suli and Fainu were ready. If not, keep searching.

If we promoted those young guns I doubt they'd be very much cheaper than the 3 players you want to let go.
Fainu & Metcalfe are budding playmakers, and those don't come cheap.

You got any news or additional info you can share on the salary cap snake?

See my updated post - those guys have zero NRL experience and would start a fair bit cheaper than the players we let go. The issue is re-signing Api and Siro to upgraded contracts.

If Lussick goes we can definitely afford any two of the list I put up (bear in mind we would only be paying about 25% of the contract of anyone we sign from another club given the NRL financial year is half over and the other club would most likely top it up)

I believe we will win our appeal - but even on top of that releasing Lussick, Brown, Uate, Myles (all plodders) we free up $1.8 million ample amount to sign some nrl quality players to support what is already a strong core of rep quality players in Turbo, Dylan, DCE, Api, Marty, AFB and Jake plus young players on the up Suli, Kelly, Jetski and Paseka.

We will lose them but have to pay a whole bunch of other guys whose deals are up a lot more so there isn't that much cash left.

I wouldn’t be upgrading Sironen coming off a serious knee injury, offers less value than Jetski. I’d offer him the same contract and find someone on the market to do the job if he doesn’t take the offer, much like Cleary has done at the tigers.

As far as I see it the only players with upgrades coming would be Kelly and Api.
The list on Zero Tackle is:

Lewis Brown, Lachlan Croker, Jack Gosiewski, Jackson Hastings, Brian Kelly, Apisai Koroisau, Shaun Lane, Darcy Lussick, Curtis Sironen, Kelepi Tanginoa, Akuila Uate, Jonathan Wright

Most of the remaining guys came over on smaller deals to make their mark so they would all be in line for at least a small upgrade and in some cases a significant one. And add Suli to that list...

Yeah the only problem is they have already agreed to terms with him it just hasn’t been ratified by the NRL yet because of the Cap drama. It would be interesting to see if they change it on him.
