The Myth about Roosters marquee players. Manu joined the Roosters as a17 year old. Toupou came from Newtown (which was a Roosters feeder team). JWH came from Manly as a 19 year old-played a few first grade games at Manly. Conner Watson started as Rooster and has returned after being at Newcastle. Keary sacked by Souths. Radley came through the junior ranks. Leniu a good buy hardly a marquee signing. Sandon Smith came through NSW cup. Lindsey Collins came to the Roosters as an 18 year old. May through NSW cup. etc. Tedesco, Crighton and Sualli their big buys. Sam Walker as a 17 year old. But more importantly the NRL is a business and if you want to win a premiership think about what Bob Fulton came back to Manly in 1983 ripping the heart out of the Easts side. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story!
I think the issue, that doesn’t pass the “pub test”, is how they retain the players like you’ve mentioned, for less money that they are worth on the open market.
Don’t get me wrong, the contacts that Uncle Nick can provide outside of footy for a young bloke are second to none. It’s just we all know, that some of those players would demand higher on the open market or in other clubs.
Good on the roosters for bending the rules with golf matches and external sponsors, but one day the rumors will come back to bite.
I know of one former sponsor who couldn’t afford ‘golf days’ any longer. It was costing him more that the advertising he was receiving was worth. Him paying for ‘golf days’ (he was expected to pay) was more than he signed up for.
I only wish Manly had such an owner, so we could do the same thing as the Roosters.
I think we had this back when it was the NSWRL and clubs could do what they wanted with their money.
Now we have a very low pokie money revenue stream, no rich owner and a smaller fan base than the large clubs.
Good luck against the Storm. Ill cheer for the boys from Bondi any day of the week, vs those dirty Storm players.
