I don't go in much for ranting and raving in writing but this IS an internet forum, right? And it's never seemed to me to be a site with a 'kids welcome' sign on the front.
I have kids myself. I don't think that if they were interested I would let them join up and be an active member of a site like this (I won't let my 12 y o. join facebook yet despite intense pressure as it's just too easy to find yourself in adult company as it were).
To me it's a bit like asking people at the pub to mind their language as kids are in the bar. Maybe the kids shouldn't be in the bar in the first place as it's not an appropriate place for them to be hanging out (plenty of time to act like a clown when they're older ;-)
