NRL BLOWS IT WITH PREMATURE CALL ON TWO REFS

Class of 96

Pisspot Gargoyle article (apologies if posted elsewhere)...but he is absolutely right on this one. There is not the slightest hint of comedy in this fiasco anymore. 1 referee has been a vast improvement in delivering consistent decisions and the general flow of the game. I've not spoken to one person who has suggested leaving it at 2 refs. FFS...what will it take to get through to these morons?

THE NRL announced at the beginning of the World Cup that the tournament would be used as an experiment to determine if the one-referee system was the way to go in next year’s premiership.

The governing body would do its homework over the entire tournament then make a decision. Since then the game’s best player, Kangaroos skipper Cameron Smith, has said one referee is better than two.

The game’s most successful coach, Wayne Bennett, agreed.

They both favour scrapping the two-referee system, which has been a disaster in the NRL.

Your columnist agrees. One instead of two could halve the number of blunders. More importantly, it would create more consistency.

Typical of the NRL, head of football Brian Canavan has jumped the gun.

Last week he announced two referees were here to stay. This decision, inexplicably, was made before the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

“The two-referee system, with the speed of our game, is the one our stats say is best to be retained,’’ Canavan said.

So Smith and Bennett wouldn’t know what they are talking about. Their opinions are ignored. Instead, Canavan bases his decision on the thoughts of Tony Archer.

On games involving hopeless teams such as USA, Wales, France and Scotland without even waiting for the pressure games in the finals.

Never mind the fact Archer is being moved on as the boss of the referees.

This is just another example of slapdash NRL management. The World Cup was never an experiment. Otherwise the NRL would have waited until after the final.

It is treating us all like mugs.

We all know the standard of refereeing in the NRL last season was at an all-time low.

Different decisions and different interpretations in every game in every round.

At least we’ve seen faster and more free-flowing football in recent weeks. Less nitpicking and fewer errors.

Fans, coaches and players at least deserved a proper trial in the World Cup.

I would love to see canavans stats sheet that he refers to and compare it to mine.
My two eyes and everyone I've spoken to including comments here on ST, journos etc etc etc. 1 ref is the way to go.
It would be the only thing in rugby league that 100% of the people agree on except the dummies at league HQ.

My only question is if we were to revert to a one ref system just how long will it take before the RL media and their blind followers bleat that we need to swap back again to a 2 ref system.

Maybe one season ? Two ?

Interestingly, all the comments to the article across the entire fanbase were all for 1 ref, no exception. What a dark and miserable cave that houses Canavan must be.

smith and Bennett are untrustworthy, so let’s not use their opinion as backup for this argument. Taking them out of it, we can safely say 1 ref is best.

How will this work when Smith is playing, wouldn't that cancel out the one ref on field?

However I totally agree with the sentiment that there should be a single referee, whatever stats they are looking at, they are either deliberately skewing or they are reading them wrong

Simple, a purple whistle given to Scam as he runs out, cut out the middle man. Cam can also pocket the pay packet since is on minimum wage and struggling so much.

The NRL need to realise that they are born fk ups. The game and their comp sucks. Every decision they make is balls. Its like that Seinfeld episode where Costanza realises he makes wrong choices, then starts to do the opposite....then he starts to get things right. Starting by pulling that hot bird in the cafe. Take note NRL, start doing the opposite
