PS I get Bazeagle's point, it does behove the captain to set and maintain a set of standards that all players are expected to emulate. How you treat and behave towards current and past players is very much a part of the intangible that becomes a "culture".

Understood; however, I'd suggest DCE won't have any involvement in the plans to send off Stevie and Brett. Zorba, the CEO and the Penn's would be driving that I'd suspect. DCE would be told what the plans are and what he can and cannot say.
It might be different say in Melbourne as Smith has been captain for years and would have a strong say in farwelling Billy etc, but DCE has only just been given the gig.
I think the original post is putting too much responsibility at the feet of DCE for things he will have little say over.
I don't get the DCE hate from people (not you), they always throw the million dollar line out there but the club did that and he accepted. One man doesn't win a premiership - a well oiled machine does. That's what DCE needs to contribute to and help lead.
I hope he does and he has my full support as a fan.

What's there to argue?
I fail to see how it's DCE's responsibility as captain to co-ordinate/organise any form or send off for Stewart or Matai.
If the organisation of player send offs has now been inncorporated into a captain's responsibilty, then I humbly apologise.

Well argued.
I understand, that as far as what the club does is up to the club, but DCE is now (whether he appreciates it yet) the spiritual leader of the playing group, and how he personally conducts himself in relation to all past and current players does set a standard and attitude.
if you were a member of a team and your captain disrespected or failed to respect departing team members .... would you respect him?
DCE as Captain has my full support, but like every other member of Silvertails, I will judge him by his actions and deeds.

Yes I agree, he needs to show respect to these guys and play his part in acknowledging their legacy and contribution over the years. This includes putting any past issues, personal or otherwise aside.
I think he will; however, my personal (uninformed) opinion is - it will be limited by neither lacing up a boot this year.
That's exactly my point, wish I had expressed it as eloquently. And believe me, how he handles it will not be lost on his team mates.
