This is really interesting. There is no way anyone would expect that the team that finished equal top of the ladder would only have one player, and a winger at that, in the top 20 hit-ups.

It fits my theory that we are different to most other teams - we play total football across the park, with not a great deal of reliance on any one player to take the full load.

Yes. That was my rather clumsy attempt at a point too. Add the fact that we were pretty dysfunctional as a unit, and a few players had a lot of other things on their minds and it makes it even more amazing.

It's kind of why I am not getting too carried away with the Mateo signing. Sure he is a talent, and sure he is great for depth. And that's it. We didn't need a "Glenn Stewart" this year and we nearly made ANOTHER GF. And that was with the player disharmony/injuries. We are one very well balanced unit.

It also screams that Toovey IS the man for the job. I can't wait for next year!!

for me:

1. Snake
2. Hiku
3. Killer
4. Matai
5. Blair
6. Foran
7. DCE
8. Mason
9. Ballin
10. Lawrence
11. Buhrer
12. Symonds
13. Mateo

14. JSL
15. Lui
16. Starling
17. Hodges/ Vave/ Tetevano (Depending on opposition)

When I have seen Mateo play, he is best utilised in and around the ruck, up the middle in broken play where his offload and mobility can do most damage. As a few posters have mentioned, snake likes to sniff around these sorts of areas as well and he could really thrive.

Buhrer and symonds are strong line runners, mobile and skillful and on the edges they already have strong partnerships with DCE and Foz and I'd be reluctant to break that up.

Regarding Lawrence at back row, whilst I can understand the argument for him being there due to his speed, I worry he hasn't got the hands/skill to be as effective there as our other options.

However the solution to this would be to rotate during the game. If we are playing big sides e.g. dogs or souths then this might be a smart move during the game to bring on starling and push lawrence to back row and he can get a lesser work loads out wide but still contribute with his size.

Good side Gib but I hope Jake T gets a bench spot.

Was tempted to throw him in due to the great things I've heard about him over the last few years and the expectancy that this will be his break-through year, but I can only really go off what I have seen and unfortunately we get little to no coverage of reserve grade in England.

But the one thing that really does excite me coming up to this year is the amount of potential we have in a new young crop of players, Jake T and Gutherson in particular amongst others. Would really like to see them break in and hold down a spot like JSL did last year.

My team would be (multiple names would be offseason competition):

1. Snake
2. Taufua / Blair / Gutherson
3. Lyon (c)
4. Matai
5. Hiku
6. Foz
7. DCE
8. Starling
9. Balin
10. Lawrence
11. Buher
12. Symonds
13. Mateo

14. Tetavano
15. Vave
16. Mason
17. Horo

Depending on opposition I would sub onto the bench the below:

- Hodges
- Jake T
- JSL

We seem to be rich in the forward pack right now which is one reason I would keep Taufua on the wing. Maybe kick him inside to centre when Steve has his injury run.

Horo will not be in 17, rubbish player.

I don't understand the knock on Horo. The combo he had with Foz through the season was very effective. He is great off the short pass to straighten the attack and broke the line on multiple occasions through this. If he can put some good weight on he will be a great forward going forward.

Do you mean 2 seasons ago , Did SFA this year .
His problem was with the weight he did put on ,
Seemed like he never got match fit after coming back from injury.

I think the team for round 1 will be,
1. Stewart
2. hiku/Blair
3. Jamie Lyon
4. Steve Matai
5. Tafua/hiku
6. Foran
7. DCE
8.Lawrence
9.Ballin
10. Starling
11. Buhrer
12. Symonds
13. Mateo
14. JSL
15. Lui
16. Mason
17. ?
Could put hodges on the bench, or one of the many forward options.
