Player Ratings - Round 13

Journey Man
A tough win up in Townsville tonight. It was a struggle, but we got the points and that's all that mattered.

Tom Trbojevic 4/10 - Rocks and diamonds. It was his first game in 9 weeks after a major injury so he was bound to be tentative. Made 5 errors but also laid on tries for Siro and Jorge. Best thing is he came through with no further injury worries and will be better for the run. Worst thing is that its brought the dribblers out of the woodwork with their "Turbo should play centre" crap.

Jorge Taufua 6/10 - Tough night for Jorge. Scored a try and laid on a big hit, but was often caught out in defence, though I question if that was more because of Walker rushing up and in all the time rather than Jorge doing much wrong. But seriously.....for a winger he has to be one of the slowest in history doesn't he?

Dylan Walker 3/10 - Dylan Dylan Dylan.....what's doing son? Constantly rushing up and in is killing our left edge defence and its leaving Jorge to either follow and leave an overlap, or stay out in no mans land. Ball in hand and he's a threat, but right now he's a defensive liability.

Moses Suli 7/10 - Suli was good in his return and he made a number of strong runs along with some crucial tackles.

Reuben Garrick 5/10 - Didn't really see much of the ball other than kick returns, and with the Cows going to our left almost all of the time he wasn't called on to do much in the way of defence. Goal kicking remains a strong point.

Cade Cust 7/10 - I thought Cade played well tonight and it was pleasing to see that he does actually have a good kicking game. A wonderful flat pass put Thommo over for a meat pie.

Daly Cherry-Evans 8/10 - Gutsy effort to back up 3 days after Origin to play 80 minutes. His kicking game was on point tonight.....and it shows what we've been missing for the past 5 weeks.

Addin Fonua-Blake 7/10 - Another strong game from AFB.

Api Koroisau 6/10 - Api played mostly well tonight. His passing was good, his defence was strong and his running from dummy half was good. Would have been a 7 but loses a point for the dumb play in the first half trying to push a pass that wasn't there. It brought the Cows back into the game.

Martin Taupau 8/10 - Led from the front tonight with 187 metres and 3 offloads. Was a constant threat whenever we were attacking their line.

Joel Thompson 5/10 - Scored a good try, but was somewhat quiet tonight.

Curtis Sironen 5/10 - Our back rowers were almost carbon copies of each other tonight.

Jake Trbojevic 9/10 - What can you say? The Energizer Bunny has nothing on Jakey boy. Backs up from Origin, plays 80 minutes, runs for 128 metres and makes 45 tackles (and I dare say a lot of them were stopping Taumalolo). Awesome effort.

Jack Gosiewski 3/10 - Not Jetski's best night. First half he got run over for the Cows first try. Second half, gets 10 in the bin with his obligatory brain snap.

Manase Fainu 5/10 - Didn't get his usual amount of game time, but did nothing wrong when out there.

Morgan Boyle 5/10 - Also saw limited time, but was OK. I know he's a big bloke, but he seems to move in slow motion.

Taniela Paseka 6/10 - I thought he was the best of the bench forwards tonight and he made some decent runs. Still needs more aggression in his game though. Lucky not to be binned for a professional foul in the first half.

Right now, this is just about the best 17 we can put on the park. They weren't great tonight, but when you get the 2 points it doesn't seem to matter all that much. However, lets not gloat too much because a better team than the Cows probably would have beaten us tonight.

Des has got some kinks to work out, but if we can keep the same 17 for next weeks game I think we can beat St Merge finally and heading into the bye could be very handily placed.

Have we ever had the same 17 in consecutive weeks this year? Doesn't feel like it.
A bit of stability and our combinations will improve,
By the way I think a few of your ratings are a little harsh!

The players will surely get better with a bit of cohesion and combinations.
Turbo to learn how Cust plays, Sirro running the good lines off DCE and Walker improving on his non preferred side.

Agree with all of the above but our back rowers were huge, they practically kept us in the match with their defense last night, and made a lot of hard runs coming out of our own end. Thomo made so many one on one stops near our goal line. That rating of 5 is a disgrace, better watch the game again.

Yep the backrowers go a bit unnoticed given the power games of our two book ends however they were awesome and run incredible lines. Thommo in particular made a couple of crucial tackles some last ditch when we were tiring. So I would give them a 7 each. Turbo was indeed rusty and it was far from perfect however if he doesn’t play we probably don’t win as I’m not sure Elliot makes those try assists. So 5.5 to a 6 for me.

Agree with others that Siro and Thommo probably deserved a point or two more, they were better than just average.

Speaking of backrowers how good is Lolo ?? the guy is a machine, wouldn't you love to have him at Manly. I thought we did pretty well to contain him last night - Jake was onto him big time. He has it all, power, footwork, offload

Oh, OK.
As for Molo, he certainly has a chequered history. Obviously not deliberate but just goes to show how dangerous the game is, especially at the higher levels where some players are physically scary.

Francis Molo- (from wikipedia)
2015[edit]

On 20 June, while playing for the Broncos' feeder club, the Norths Devils against the Sunshine Coast Falcons in the Intrust Super Cup, Molo was involved in a tackle on opposition player James Ackerman, which resulted in the death of Ackerman on 22 June 2015.[10] He received an eight-week suspension for the tackle by the QRL judiciary. On 17 September, Molo played for the Cook Islands against Tonga for the World Cup qualifier.[11][12][13]

2016[edit]
On 8 May, Molo started at prop in the Cook Islands 30-20 win over Lebanon.[14] In July, while playing for the Devils, Molo received a three-game suspension for a shoulder charge against the Sunshine Coast Falcons. A brawl broke out following the tackle, with Sunshine Coast players reportedly calling Molo a "killer". Two Sunshine Coast players were also suspended, for attacking Molo. It came after being suspended three weeks earlier for a similar incident.[15]

2017[edit]
On 20 July, Molo was released from his contract with the Broncos and joined the Townsville Blackhawks mid-season.[16]

On 24 October, Molo signed a one-year deal with the North Queensland Cowboys after training with their first grade squad while playing for the Blackhawks.[17]

2018[edit]
In Round 11 of the 2018 NRL season, Molo made his debut for the Cowboys in their 19–20 loss to the South Sydney Rabbitohs. It was his first NRL game in almost three years. On 28 June, he re-signed with the Cowboys for two more seasons.[18]

So here’s the big question for Des.
When the immortal Ranga comes back who gets left suli or Walker. Walker is a match winner in attack but has some defensive issues. It will be interesting also I think a fit Waddell is in our 17.

Cust is a great foil for Daly and was solid again.
The thing I like is it’s almost impossible to score through our middle third this year. It’s kicks or out wide where teams get us.

Thompson and Siro were fantastic.

A couple of APIs one on ones with JT were fantastic. Incredibly strong little bugger.
The commentators kept banging on about JT but I thought we handled him well. He did make a some offloads at times but we stopped him from making those who carries where he skittles defenders and gets quick play-the-balls...they are more dangerous than his offloads. A lot of it was down to Api's contact, controlling the ruck and putting JT on the ground. He was fantastic in D.

Guys, at no point did I say that Thommo and Siro had bad nights. But other than their tries, to me they were generally quiet with most of the forwards work being done up the middle.

They played their part in the win and I'm not trying to take anything away from that. But tries aside, others just had more influence on the outcome.

Here is something I wouldn't mind seeing when everyone is available (except Sips unfortunately right now)

Suli to the wing, Parker to left centre, Walker to right centre.....and Jorge coming off the bench as an impact player in place of Jetski.

Jorge is at that point in his career where I think he could easily cover both the backs and the back row off the bench. The only thing I do worry about is his work rate if he ever does play in the forwards.

As for Cade Cust.....I still think Croker is the better choice, but its good to know we have options that don't include moving Dylan Walker back to the halves.

Taumalolo may have made 285 metres, but his influence was minimised by the defence of Jake and Api who in defence especially continues to punch well above his weight class.

Seriously, if Jake had sat out last night and Gosiewski had been at lock as originally planned....I shudder at the thought because it would have been like a Jetski trying to tackle the QEII head on.....a mismatch of mammoth proportions.

As always a pretty damn good assessment overall once again V8 however I do think Api gets a bum deal sometimes, not just your assessment but in general. I though Api was huge in Defence, I had trouble viewing admittedly with poor quality streaming / IT issues but what I did see I thought he was 7 or 8 personally, just my opinion.
That said a 10 for you, your reviews are mostly more accurate and reliable than commentators.

I do appreciate you sticking your neck out each week and doing the ratings.

Keep it up mate.
