For those interested, such as @Brookie1973 hopefully, here is a new thread named to honour the recently murdered/assassinated Charlie Kirk

I'd scarcely heard of the bloke before yesterday but since then have learned he was a young guy who was passionate about encouraging respectful political debate, especially in colleges and high schools.

I know nothing of his actual politics aside from him being described as a staunch Christian, a conservative, and active supporter of Trump and VD Vance.

So I assume I would disagree with him about almost everything.

But rather than tell everyone not to discuss him, or his death, or his words, I offer this thread as a discussion place effectively to honour the one thing (so far) that I agree and admire him for, namely his apparent willingness and passion to debate with people he disagreed with. Specifically, without using personal abuse insults and bullying tactics (apparently).

I never saw his debates but that is how I've heard them described.

As for the 'trump' thread, that is a travesty and I'm unlikely to ever poke my head in there again.

So here's an opportunity for a reset.

A new approach.

I don't want to assassinate any Silvertails (or anyone, that I can think of at the moment) and vitriol and put-downs only seem to heighten differences and make meaningful communication of different views hard to impossible.

As footy fans do we even need to have respectful serious discussions? No. Of course not. But for anyone that does... here's a thread we could try?
🙂

Are you scared of the Trump thread? I have already posted relevant material there. I promise I will take it easy on you.

Right wing extremist = anyone that disagrees with global Marxism
This is exactly what I was hoping we can avoid. That is not a serious comment, it is a putdown designed to stop discussion.
Also it is patently incorrect.
If you want to trash this thread before it's even started then carry on. Otherwise please take a moment and then try again.

Here is some information on ADL, the source quoted in the charts above. Maybe take a moment to consider whether your information is politically biased, then try again.

Is that how Charlie used to debate? Tell people to go and read some article and then come back and try again?

Why don't we just try using our own words and ideas? Everyone here is smart enough to do that, if so inclined.

Is there an updated version? Turns out the shooter yesterday had engraved messages about transgender issues into his ammunition. Safe to assume it was politically motivated.

I feel American media has poisoned the minds of many with the rhetoric constantly used. Words like Nazi, fascist, commy etc is used on the daily by news outlets like CNN, Fox & the rest to describe people they disagree with. Makes these mentally ill people think they are some kind of hero in my opinion

And the politicians.
When Trump was first running back in 2015 I was gobsmacked at the way he referred to political opponents. Admittedly I hadn't followed US politics before then so maybe others had been doing that? I got the distinct impression he was taking political vitriol to new levels (and he's never stopped, only gone further and further with that sort of rhetoric - judges are corrupt etc etc etc).

Its funny and sad that so many Americans don't know the meaning of the terms they use ( all the ones you mentioned) but they use them and get angry with whom they label them.

Yes engraved shell casings were found but nothing proven yet, could be subterfuge. We will have to wait and see.

Here are some relevant articles on the link between dangerous left wing rhetoric and rising violence against anyone considered conservative/nazis. The link is obvious to any thinking person, so I won’t bother putting it in my own words.

Note also the danger of believing statistics about the motives of perpetrators, given the propensity of those on the left to use the old “motives are unclear” for anyone clearly left of centre.

Yes the politicians including Trump & Harris in the most recent race continued to throw out the disgusting rhetoric. You’d think after the 1st attempt on trumps life they’d stop but it seems this is the new norm sadly.

He created a PROFESSOR WATCH LIST that made educators targets of right wing zealots because of perceived left wing bias

Yes, how dare he encourage students to call out discrimination of conservative students by leftist “educators”. As we all know, only certain groups can use the discrimination card, and conservatives are definitely not one of them.

Here's a suggestion.
Say what you think or believe.
If you are relying on published facts to support it, then include a link by all means.
But simply saying here read this article/video etc to find out what I think? No thanks

How about we try to avoid sarcasm? Just in this one thread.
You can obviously post whatever/however you want. But are you interested in the reset, the new approach I posed? I'd like to think you'll give it a go

I assumed it was obvious, but what I think is that violence against conservatives is the natural consequence of constant violent rhetoric by left wing media and commentators since the day Trump first announced his initial run for President.

Not sure what the problem with sarcasm is, it’s a well recognised, effective communication tool. “Sarcasm is a complex and multifaceted form of expression which can be used to add depth, nuance and humour to both written and spoken communication”.

But putting that aside, I have come to realise over many, many interactions on here that when it comes to this debate, both sides are so wedded to their respective positions, that no amount of resets is going to change opinions one iota. But I give you credit for trying.

Returning to the crux of this debate, my position is that political debate has been fatally compromised by violent leftist rhetoric and divisiveness that had its origins in the Obama presidency. Here is an article from CNN of all places which nicely summarises the Obama legacy.

Main problem with it is it is inclined to stop discussion, not encourage it. It treats the opponent's view with disdain, does it not?

Ok, thank you for putting a position. Could you give any example of violent leftist rhetoric from the Obama presidency? I wasn't really paying attention back then (and I did actually look at the farewell speech opinion link, I saw no quotes at all in that)
