Qld defence

Last night was a solid game that’s for sure and I’m happy to see the Blues get up. One thing that’s always intrigued me is how Qld can get to the line in defence as fast as they do! NSW were only making a couple of metres each run. We (Manly) need to do that. If we can get Gilly as a defensive coach I’d be all over it. They have done it for years and I’ve always been impressed

You might want to compare the names in the two packs.

One is picked from a collection of elite players from across the NRL, the other is an assembly put together by those mental giants Barrett/Cartwright/Fulton.

Your point though is very well made, QLD were impressive.

Our pack reads well on paper but the fact is they don't perform. Sure the numbers are impressive at times eg Api's tackle count and Marty's metres. But is Jake is the only one who has a proper "dig" every week.

Our bench is a massive issue even when we are dominant, the likes of Jetski, Perrett and Brown just dont cut it, although Lane has stepped up big time.

The loss of Sironen hasnt helped, but plenty of clubs are dealing with injury.

QLD will be better once Gillett comes back, they should also put Matt Scott back in there and get rid of Cooper.

Qld were offside quite a lot. Manly wont get away with that in clubgames even though they will be adjudicated the same apparently. But they did tackle strong, were very committed, they just lacked the big game players to ice the deal

In many games previously nsw have dominated physically but still lost. Smarts win games

I thought what qld missed was the game turning moments from smith. When qld are struggling he generally finds a super kick and chase from inside there own territory to get to the other end. They then use that super offside defence to cement it

in the nrl world we would get penalized for offside

There is defence and there is stopping teams scoring. Like some of manlys games especially last year where they turn up, hit hard and tackle hard but also miss 60 tackles in a match

I doubt kevvie would be impressed with the teams defence overall even though it looked as if it may get them back into the game at one point

Frizell , addo carr and mitchell in particular had spiders on them

We'd have 4 in the bin before halftime.

But still, in origin, qld have got away with it.
They have always rushed when we are trying to get off our line.
It's been impressive, shown commitment and changed games.

Its origin, so the distance comes in from 10m to 7m & on top of that, the refs are more lenient so it comes back to 5m.
The players are also held down given more time in the wrestle than an NRL game, which ensures the defence is set and coming up as the ball is played.
The icing on the cake is the SOO arena where energy is higher tempo than an NRL game and players maintain line speed far longer due to adrenaline.

This is an excellent post! Qld were in NDW face and defending hard but also missed a shedload of tackles. Running out of the line like GI did a few times also creates gaps ... I saw some great runs from dummy half (Cook was excellent last night) which created some great opportunities... I noticed Cook also did a fair amount of kicking as Cleary/Maloney were being caught by the very quick Qld defenders.

The game is evolving and Manly needs:

- A 9 who can run and kick
- Halves/fullback that will back up dummy half runs like Maloney (is there anyone better)
- The occasional 4th tackle kick to keep the opposition wingers in two minds and create space
- SPEED!!!!!!! Fark we’re lacking speed ...

“- A 9 who can run and kick”

Love Api’s enthusiasm and heart but I would love to see him be a big more creative taking the line on and kicking. The better teams have hookers who create from nothing.

What you saw on Wednesday night was defensive line speed, something foreign to the Manly supporter in 2018. You might have also seen more than 2 players in a tackle, yes this is legal.

In NRL the referees penalise defence when it gets forceful. We could ahve Origin style footy every week if the referees just stayed out of it.

I recall Manly a few years back under Hasler really stepping up their defence speed and forcefulness when opposing teams were bringing the ball back from their own try line. Choc & Gift especially would do it. Nearly everytime the referees would ping them for offside or some other excuse. As a team it just isn't worth trying what the Maroons did as you well get penalised.

But when you're behind on the scoreboard & momentum as soon as you try via your defence to get back into the contest, bang goes the referee whistle again.
