THE Canberra Raiders have chosen troubled fullback Jack Wighton to play in Thursday night’s desperation match against the Canterbury Bulldogs despite an ongoing police investigation into his involvement in a nightclub brawl.

The Daily Telegraph revealed that the NRL integrity unit had been alerted to an ACT police probe into a late-night brawl in the Canberra suburb of Civic involving six men.

Police have obtained CCTV footage of the fight but the integrity unit, unlike in previous cases, has made no attempt contact the nightclub or obtain film of the brawl.

Well said. I saw a movie once in which Nicholas Cage got in a fight and it wasn't really his fault, although got jailed for it, oh well.
(Might not have been a true story though, I think it was ConAir.)

JACK Wighton missed the Raiders’ win over the Bulldogs amid an off-field storm as police investigate a Canberra fight that the star fullback was allegedly involved in.
And according to senior News Corp journalist Paul Kent, Wighton may have played his last game for the Green Machine, with the 25-year-old set to face charges that could result in his sacking from the club.

Details into the police investigation are still scarce but it is understood that allegations against Wighton come from an altercation that took place earlier this year, weeks before Canberra’s season opening loss to the Titans.

NRL star Jack Wighton will fight multiple assault charges after pleading not guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court.

Wighton was charged with nine offences over an alleged incident outside Canberra's Academy night club on February 3.

The Canberra Raiders full-back's charges include three of assault causing actual bodily harm and five common assault against at least four alleged male victims.

Three of the common assault charges read out in court related to an unknown male.

Wighton is also facing a charge of urinating in a public place.

The matter will return to court for a one-day hearing in July.

Wighton has pleaded not guilty so, as it should be, he is free to play. Only if he is proven to have done something wrong in a court of law does the NRL have a right to intervene.
Any person suggesting Wighton should be stood down is misguided.
