Ref boss: "Nothing to see here"

The Who

Journey Man
Sutton has ruled that all the contentious calls in the Donkeys favour were justified.
He said the knock-on was a knock back... now, I could live with that if I hadn't watched any RL for the past decade when virtually every dropped ball is ruled a knock-on. Let's see if any other team receives the same consideration in the rest of the round. If so, then perhaps knock-backs will once again be ruled in that way, which would be a good thing.
Not surprisingly he said the penalty and sin-binning in the 79th minute was correct.
The report, on the NRL propaganda web site, did not mention the penalty against a Morris Brother for a brush nowhere near the ball which was ruled an obstruction.
The Dogs were duded. As an unbiased spectator to the match it clearly showed that the NRL has a rule: "All teams are created equal; only some teams north of the border are more equal than others" (with apologies to George Orwell)

i can't argue with anything you say, but, it cost the dogs a possible victory & foran plays for the dogs so I'm happy to be like sutton & pretend all the calls were correct!@;)

Like yourself, I watched the game as an unbiased spectator & noticed after the dogs scored their first try the refs started blowing the peas out of their whistles giving penalties to the donkeys.

Have a look at the 2013 grand final again, about 3 minutes in and young Mitchell Pearce knocks one 'back' in the same manner as last night and the refs had no problem with that one either oddly enough.

This clown Sutton has form for making appalling decisions as we experienced last September!! The knock on was a farce, to award a penalty to decide a game is criminal, that is twice the donkeys have profited this year from a referees penalty decision at the death!!

I wonder if Greenturd will fine the Dogs and Dean Pay as he did to us and the Sharks last September.

I RESENT that there is zilch accountability for the officials over their officiating and you speak out you are vilified by Greenturd!! Another reason why fans are further alienated from the game under Greenturds watch!!

The referees using loose interpretations of the rules to massage games towards a desired result and the outright howlers in favour of certain preferred teams has me at the point where I am all but totally checked out of the NRL.

It feels like I'm watching the WWE, the way the competition seems to run according to the script year after year.

I used to get so angry about this type of thing but once you accept that the game has been corrupted the anger gets replaced by sadness and helplessness, and ultimately a lack of interest in the game, which i actually find much easier to deal with. Things won’t change while Todd is in charge.

People only have to look at how Manly are penalised not only this year but over the last few years.

This year has been worse as the penalties have flown to both teams with counts regularly around the 13-12, 10-9 mark each game.

I don't know what the count was in the Gold Coast game but with only around 20% of the ball in the first half, i can only imagine it was heavily in favour of them.

The parra game was bordering on corrupt as the count went something like 9-1 early into the 2nd half. The only penalty we got was when Api threw the ball into the guy standing in the ruck area....otherwise we wouldn't have had one. Once the game was gone, we got the obligatory 4 or 5 penalties at the death to make it look better.

Newcastle game we were made to get back 13-14 metres regularly in defence and the refs hardly had them back the 10.

The game is definately "managed" more the last couple of years than at any other time that i've watched league since the early 70's.

It is disheartening and i really fell for our guys who are out there trying but get rorted.

Some teams are good enough to handle it when the count goes against them in a big way but we're not.

Just an even crack of the whip is what i would like, it's what i should expect but sadly i don't anymore...

Monday Buzz: The NRL referee statistics that will shock supporters

AS soon as the Brisbane Broncos beat the Canterbury Bulldogs in controversial circumstances on Thursday night, an interesting statistic emerged on social media.

That the Broncos had incredibly won 14 consecutive games under the refereeing of Gerard Sutton at Suncorp Stadium.

So we decided to drill down on the stats further and check the home-ground records of other referees in the past five seasons.

In 14 consecutive wins under Sutton, the Broncos have lost the penalties only four times and have an average winning margin of 12 points.

It’s also interesting that in the year of a massive penalty crackdown on offside defence, play-the-balls and being square at marker, the Broncos were perfect in the second half against the Bulldogs, not giving away a single penalty.

That’s more startling than the 14 consecutive wins.

The Broncos have won their past 14 at Suncorp Stadium when Gerard Sutton was in charge.
So there is a perception out there that the Broncos always get the “bounce of the ball” or the “50-50 calls” when Sutton is refereeing their home games.

He has also done more Broncos home games than any other referee.

So we decided to go back to 2014 and check the penalty record of all referees who have done 10 or more games at any particular home ground.

It turns out Brisbane’s record under Sutton since the beginning of 2014 is 15 wins from 16 games. That’s 93.8 per cent, compared to 70.9 per cent under all referees.

Under the highly rated Grant Atkins, it’s just 66.7 per cent.

Remarkably, this exercise threw up another club/referee combination that is even “better” than Sutton and the Broncos.

The Sydney Roosters have won their past 11 in a row at Allianz Stadium under Matt Cecchin yet their overall win record at the ground since 2014 is 68.5 per cent.

I guess it just shows that some teams play better under some referees.

The Sydney Roosters have won their past 11 in a row at Allianz Stadium under Matt Cecchin.
At the other end of the table, some teams have shocking records under certain referees.

The Raiders have won only two of their past 10 under Ashley Klein in Canberra.

The Bulldogs have also won only two from 10 under Sutton at ANZ Stadium.

Now let’s get one thing clear. We are in no way questioning the integrity of our referees.

They are all impartial.

Your columnist believes they do their best each week but suffer from poor leadership.

Like the players, they will always make mistakes.

Yet we can quietly learn from this research.

Next time the Broncos get a home game, send someone other than Sutton to Suncorp Stadium.

Next time the Roosters are at home, maybe give Cecchin another game.

And unless you really want another $10,000 off Ricky Stuart, stop sending Klein to the nation’s capital.

The Broncos as home have always been a law unto themselves. For the ref's boss to come out and rubber stamp those appalling decisions is indicative of a failing system.

This is disgusting.
I'd also like to see stats on disallowed tries that could have easily been awarded. We've had 3 which have potentially decided matches.
Titans, Knights, Chooks.
We win those and we're in the comp at 5 from 9, not two.
We had two disallowed in another game two. A total of 5.
The game is so corrupt that I believe for our game this week at suncorp they won't use Sutton but we'll still get nailed just for the NRL to prove it's not the refs, the donkeys are just well disciplined.
There really needs to be a concentrated study into the manipulation of results. This comp is just blatantly unfair.

I'd love to hear their explanation for holding up the game while Cooper Cronk gets his head bandaged. WTF was that ? We are on the attack, get held up over the line and are looking to get on with the play. Cronk should have been sent out the back of play to get fixed up and they should have been defending their line with 12. Of course Perineum stops play for 5 minutes while he gets seen to and gives them a breather and kills our momentum.

Now let’s get one thing clear. We are in no way questioning the integrity of our referees.

They are all impartial.
Herein lies the problem. No ones allowed to question the officials. Their integrity should be held up for debate and critism when warranted. And they're definitely not impartial. That was the point of the story, was it not?

No no no, it’s not that the refs are corrupt, it’s just that some teams’ playing style seem to suit particular refs ... hahahahaha
