Sydney Roosters preparing massive offer for Broncos star Tevita Pangai Junior, report

WRITTEN BYSPORTING NEWS

The Brisbane Broncos will next month begin formal negotiations to re-sign boom forward Tevita Pangai Junior to a long-term deal - but the Sydney Roosters are also reportedly set to swoop on the off-contract star.

Channel 7 reporter Chris Garry on Wednesday revealed the Broncos plan to start contract talks with the star forward after Round 4 and hope to have his signature secured before the Origin period.

The 23-year-old has played four Tests for Tonga but has pledged his allegiance to Brad Fittler's NSW Blues and is considered a strong chance to debut in Game 1 against Queensland on June 5.

Pangai Junior entered this season already in high demand after opting to sign a one-year extension with the Broncos in December following a breakout 2018 campaign.

He produced arguably the best performance of his 56-game NRL career against North Queensland last Friday night.

His expected asking price of around $800,000 a season would likely head further north if he earns a Blues jumper.

And the Broncos, already tight on salary cap space, are eager to take Pangai Junior off the market.

"Obviously if Tevita continues to play like he did on the weekend we want to keep him around the club," coach Anthony Seibold said.

"… I'm really enjoying coaching Tevita, He had a bit of a disrupted pre-season with a couple of hamstring issues but I think you've seen over the first two weeks - I thought he was really strong off the bench against the Storm.

"… And he was certainly really strong against the Cowboys last week, particularly at the start of the game."

But defending premiers the Roosters, who made an unsuccessful play to poach Pangai Junior last season, are expected to have another major crack at the rampaging prop.

Maybe the Roosters have a special salary cap calaculator that they gift wrapped to NRL. It really is farcical

Batty.....you don't think they'll be reserving that for a replacement half?? Can't see them buying an average half to be honest.

Other than the fact that players like Mitchell and Keary will be looking at significant upgrades to their contracts.

Two things will turn droves of fans off rugby league:
1. The Roosters continual, seemingly legal, cheating g of the salary cap.
2. Having to listen to Anthony Seibold’s voice.

Why don't we just have a draft system, everyone on 1 year contract and give the roosters the first 30 draft picks.

Then the next 30 to the Donkeys and next 30 to Storm.

At least that would all be legal and transparent...

This NRL Admin is a bigger joke than the one I just made.

The roosters must be playing a game of seeing how far can we push this signing of stars without the NRL asking questions.

Even they must be wondering how do we keep getting away with this, let's try again and see what happens.

Pity we couldn't manage our cap like The Roosters.

The joke is is not The Roosters, its actually Manly, Sharks and Dogs etc who have a distinct inability to manage the cap properly.

Two things can happen here

- They release Lindsay Collins and can fit TPJ under their sombrero
- The most overpaid under performer in the squad is busted with recreational drugs and his contract is terminated at no cost to the Roosters, thus freeing up sombrero space

Add Radley, Manu and the fact they have already somehow fitted in an amazing number of superstars under the counter/cap, thought it was a stitchup when I first seen the article.
I think Ian Shubert was hired to look after the cap for them and he was part of the hierarchy, so pretty much explains why there is no explanation needed.
I will say 1 thing though, its true better players will be drawn to a top side and maybe go there, or stay there for less money (to a point) and this is an advantage Manly once had, but do not atm.

I forgot about Manu and Radley. How they are supposed to be cap compliant would make for an episode of Great Mysteries of the World.

How sad to think that Schubert was once a Sea Eagle.
