Some quotes from the press conference tonight:

  • “I was really proud of the effort”
  • “Canberra have been really good this year”
  • “We led after, what? 50 minutes or 55 minutes or whatever it was”
  • “There’s a tonne of effort”
  • “We did a lot of good things in the first half”
  • “We had a red hot crack”

Another key stat from tonight’s presser: the word “effort” was used 9 times! (6 from Seibold, 3 from DCE)

As mentioned the other day, this guy loves a bit of mediocrity lol. As long as you do the bare minimum of wanting to win the game as a professional athlete though it doesn’t matter how many times you fall short right!?

I identify as Seibold neutral / he / him but listening to that press conference made me quite sick. It reeked of a clueless, everyone gets a prize vibe.

He is making it very hard to stay neutral. I wish we didn't lash out a few years ago on fancy new garden furniture after Trent left. Maybe Seibs would quit?

Manly chair and majority owner Scott Penn has revealed that the club emerged from a board meeting this week with their full support behind coach Anthony Seibold as he battles to keep the Sea Eagles in finals contention amid a mounting injury toll.
Seibold bristled on Thursday when asked about his future, dismissing suggestions that he was under pressure to keep some members of the playing group on side.

Penn insisted that Seibold, who has two years to run on his deal, still had his backing and that external forces were lobbing “grenades’ at the club and its coach.

“We’re all aligned,” Penn said. “We know what we need to do. We have lost a lot of forwards during the year. We have lost our starting front row and at various times most of the back row.

Regardless of the who the coach was last night we did not have the team on the field that would have any hope of competing seriously in the finals. I say this predominantly with our current forward pack in mind. Our back rowers were at best average NSW cup players. Our 2 starting props are at the twilight of their careers. Jake needs to be a 40min player from now on and his career will likely end earlier than expected. I am not defending Siebs I never thought from day one he was the coach for Manly but it would have been at lot worse if we persisted with DES….

That’s assuming that (a) he’s lost the senior players and it’s not just media spin and (b) that he’s lost them on the grounds of performance and not some other reason, I.e. the personal dynamic between coach and players.

I don’t have it in for Seibs but it’s pretty rare for an effective coach to lose the dressing room; the idea that when a critical mass of people are aligned in their feeling or perception, it becomes irrational to dismiss it.

I agree with you.

It was more a comment that at the same time, as leaders, the senior players (who in this case also occupy about 25% of the salary cap) are almost as important as the coach. And in this case they might have representative honours and present well on TV, but they've delivered not much at club level over the past 11 years under 4 coaches, for which they largely escape blame. My point being, it is not entirely the fault of the coach even though the buck stops with him.

Whatever happens from here, we cannot simply do what we've done every few years since 2014, because otherwise we'll be back at this point in 2028.

But this isn’t just about last night,it’s about Seibold’s whole tenure.Fans could excuse last night due to the forward pack unavailabilities, but they had enough ball and good territory to win that match and they basically had a full strength backline

An over rated , over paid halfback and 5/8th was the major fault last night. Until they're both gone expect more of the same. Also an over paid lame duck fullback.

Wish he'd say what he really wants to say. It's like he has to be politically correct all the time for some ridiculous reason.
Its a thing in the USA.
Coaches do not publicly diss players. For fear that they will not want to play for them.
30 MLB teams ( cheapest will cost you close to $2B ) and the only manager who has publicly spoken bad about a player no longer has a job.

Like des did you back the players through thick and thin, and hope they repay you.

Yeah, but with only 4 games to go and Cherry exiting pretty soon, he could say tongue in cheek hinting on some changes to next week's side. ...just do it, what have you got to lose.

Wheres the petition so we can sign it

I can never understand why people get upset over what Seibold says in a press conference. Its what he says behind closed doors and how the players react to it,that matters. If Manly win, does anyone care or actually listen to his press conference?

100% who watches them
Surely des put everyone off them

Because there is no honesty. You get honesty from all the good coaches. Every single one of them.

Seibold must be German for pfaff

Don’t know how many times I have to explain this. Yes, it matters what he says behind closed doors - obviously. BUT it also matters what he says in public because we THE FANS AND MEMBERS deserve to feel that our coach is invested in the club as much as we are! If he’s not then fuuck off. Furthermore, if he held the players to account in public then he is placing them under more pressure to perform. Giving them public excuses sends a poor message to the players and the fans. So yes, what he says in public IS important. Don’t forget, without us fans the club does not exist.

Need to see Walsh get some NRL games under his belt while we are playing for nothing. Perfect opportunity. Seibs is too dumb to take it though. He will persist with a bloke thats leaving in 4 weeks.

But how does what he say at a press conference, have anything to do with how the team performs the following week, other than if he publicly sprays them? Fans forget pretty quickly or not even care what the coach says if the team is winning.

It's not what he says, it's how he says it. Look at Bennett, Bellamy, Stuart, even Robinson.

Now look at Seibold. ZERO authenticity. That doesn't change when he walks into a dressing room. A fake is a fake is a fake.

Yes, it may have been worse with Des, but hes on the tailend of his 20 year coaching career which with most long term coaches is on a downward trajectory ....meanwhile the incumbent coach has been on a downward trajectory ever since he started coaching.
