Same old mistakes by the same old players

Tonight's loss was all to do with our errors!!

It is really frustrating that our wingers get really good metres with the ball and continue to make the same errors under the high ball. This has been an issue that has not improved over the last five years or so. We rarely score from a bomb and we continue to concede repeat sets by not diffusing opposition bombs.

Our discipline was atrocious at times and we lost two tries on the back of us attacking, spilling the ball, conceding a penalty and finally a soft try from dummy half.

The effort was there as was the commitment. It's only game one and the team showed that they will hold their own this season.

DCE had a chance to manage the game and failed in the clutch plays. All the key statistics indicate that we should have won well.

Our biggest weapon, Tommy turbo was not really in the game and he has to be more involved.

This team is a work in progress for sure . The team has to play with control and discipline and that was missing tonight .

If we play the same way next week we will be smacked. Let's hope the lesson is heeded from tonight!!

You are right - in cold hard light of a new day;

- soft penalties AFB anyone?
- poor decision making in attack
- dropped ball
- DCE why he went for a miracle field goal in GP 2 half is beyond me
- three soft tries close to out try line, simple missed tackles
- only using two off the bench

We missed Walker badly last night, still some positives, give this I am surprised we got as close as we did

Apart from that AFB leapfrog penalty, some others were soft to piggy back the Knights and were home crowd penalties - simple as that.
AFB was a beast on the ball and tackled well, also played big minutes.
Sirro was poor, Uates drop was bad but not helped by the fact Ross pushed Wright into him which should have been another Manly penalty.
Time to push that game aside and move forward.

Aku made one big mistake ( under pressure) , there were 16 others!

Reduce that to 7 and the game would have been won without the need for GP!

I thought our whole backrow looked slower and more cumbersome than last year. Is it fitness or weight?

Didn't pick up on that myself mate .... but as I spend countless posts last year trying to educate the numbnuts .... Thommo will be lucky to break 85m a game just like Winterstein did last year .... our whole game pattern does not utilise our 2nd rowers as much as other teams.

And I know Joel Thompson is a good player ... but he didn't do anything last night that Frankie didn't do as well if not better last year... that may change if our attack changes.

Too much ball work in the middle and not enough utilisation of Siro and Thommo on the edges for mine ... a better balance could be achieved I think.

Hey woodsie... dce missed a conversion so we shoulda won by a point (or two as it would not have gone to golden point)!!!

hyuck hyuck hyuck!~

He can't control himself off field why would we expect better on it.
Oh & you know this from experience? You must have first hand knowledge of AFB & his off field behaviour.......NOT! You know nothing mate! He was penalised once for the play the ball & what else. You make out like it's his fault we lost! Will gladly go on with this!

Funnily enough that's been our pattern since Baz became coach. And its similar to how he played, his back rowers were more workhorses in defence than ball runners because they hardly saw any ball. He would either go himself or go outside to his centre or winger.

When Des and then Tooves were coaching us, BK, Beaver, Choc, T-Rex, T-Red, Horo, they all saw plenty of the ball. But under TB that has changed.

I know .... I have tried without success I think to convince everyone bagging Winterstein for his lack of metres last year that it was the game pattern, not Frank's inability ..... last night Thommo the superstar was there ... but the result was the same .

Yep. Baz's style seems to be strong runs up the middle, then shift it to the centres or wingers while using the back rowers mostly as decoy runners.

How often last year did we criticise Winterstein for running decoys and not the ball? Something I was guilty of until I noticed it last night.

Fact is that he wasn't getting the ball to run it. It was only when he injected himself into the game and went looking for the ball that he got to run with it.

And thinking about it, it mostly happens on the left where the 5/8 is (TB was a 5/8 himself who played on the left mostly). Walker didn't use Kapow in 2016, Green hardly used Frank last year and Croker hardly used Thompson last night. On the right however, DCE does use Siro.

Thompson isn't just a defensive workhorse. He's a strong ball runner who still has some pace left in him (similar to Luke Lewis in that respect). We'd be silly not to use his strengths.

Hear hear. And tbh, I thought last year Frank at least had some strong, hard runs that created stuff. Barrett is supposed to be a very tactical, cerebral coach, but what he did with Winterstein last night, confused me (which doesn't take much hahaha). But that last Newcastle try, where the Knights player basically pushed aside Thompson to score right underneath him annoyed me.

Maybe shake things up, and start with last years backrow and have Thompson come off the bench. Go with:

14. XXXXXXXXX
15. Kelepi Tanginoa
16. Lloyd Perrett
17. Joel Thompson

Doesn't confuse me ... I think it was a simple case of good coaching on the fly ... when he had the choice to again rotate players towards the end of the game, he could have gone with either Brown or Frank or both, but he chose to go with Lane and Kelepi who had both exceled earlier ...

Nobody was fatiqued or injured so it was simply a case of them not being needed,

Nope I know it from a court case when he kicked his pregnant girlfriend (plead guilty). But it's ok because he wears our jersey if he played for any other team we all know the reaction. Not saying he doesn't deserve a second chance in life but the nrl and clubs owe these domestic violence grubs no chances and should be out of the game for life.
I wonder if you would be so forgiving or have your head in the sand if it was your mum, sister or daughter who was kicked by this guy.

Jesus dude. I don't even know WHAT to say about a post like this. We don't know all the ins and outs though.

If my daughter or sister thought enough of him, to be still with him and to have forgiven him ... I would that into consideration, keep my mouth shut, and wish them the best for the future ...

but that is just me ....

Siro was hopeless

He wasn't the only bloke to give away a penalty last night and we're not drilling into their personal lives.. I feel you are drawing a fairly long bow.
