So far as I can tell, here is our current 30-man squad, after the departure of Lussick and addition of Hodkinson. The club site has Fainu listed and Myles not listed but that’s probably wishful thinking.

I listed players’ contract dates using @Chip and Chases’s helpful Manly Squad Status thread.

So, for the purpose of planning for next year (and bearing in mind contracts don’t guarantee players won’t get moved on) … who to re-sign? Who to let go?

We can probably assume Myles, Lane, Uate & Hastings won’t be here, and probably not Brown or J Wright.

Fainu will come in. Who else?

Allegedly Siro and Api have 2 or 3 year contract extensions sitting on the table waiting resolution of the salary cap issue.

Looks like we won't be signing any big name player (unless we release one).

For example, let's scrap forwards 13, 14, 15 and promote Fainu, and maybe Amone - but with upgrades needed for Api, Siro, and probably Paseka, Jetski, & Tanga - we could only afford a minimum wage guy for the last spot?

Backs -if we let 13, 14, & 15 go, we could promote Anderson, maybe Cust or Metcalfe... and sign one experienced winger, such as Feki or Maumolo?

If we upgrade Jetski we have serious serious issues...
Lol Yeah I like his aggressive play but good point.
Maybe only keep 2 out of Perrett Paseka Jetski & Taninoa, and try to get a Sia Soliola type as suggested by the Better Robbo.

Raiders have already lost Boyd and Paulo so doubt that they would part ways with Soliola but certainly a handy player still . Trying to recruit Feki would send all of the wrong messages to our younger and promising outside backs already on the books . Warriors would be reluctant to let Maumolo go [ and in any case would come with a serious price tag ] , so again would prefer to give the younger present outside backs at Manly a go . Really can not see a suitable half on the market available to recruit , would still prefer to go with Walker and Tom Wright as a 5 / 8 options , Cust and Metcalfe not ready and not good enough at the moment . Jetski needs to get his tackling technique in order and really can or should not expect any significant upgrade

Geez we have some very poor players locked up for a long period of time

Definitely need to sign an experienced back or 2. Feki or maumolo would be ideal. I’m all for promoting youth but in a staggered manner.

1. Turbo
2. Anderson
3.walker
4. Kelly
5.Feki/Maumolo

Reserves
Tom W
Tuafua
Funa
Suli

I can't see the point in moving Walker to 5/8 on a permanent basis because he won't solve the problem of needing two kickers on the 5th tackle otherwise DCE just gets targeted again and has to make rushed decisions.

Not doubting your logic there but who is definitely out there to acquire as a suitable half . As this season is gone , Barrett may as well just go with Walker and Tom Wright as 5 / 8 options and just see what transpires then , Certainly would not lack any speed there and Tom Wright must have some kicking ability coming from a union background and Walker played 5 / 8 as a junior .

Also three of Manly "s best performances this season [ against the Roosters , Broncos and Storm ], have featured Walker as a 5 / 8 . [ although not the full duration against the Storm of course ] Jamie Lyon while naturally one of the best centres of his era played his share of 5 / 8 for Manly when the situation warranted it . ,Really can not see much difference in Walker"s case although would still prefer to see Tom Wright get a go there initially at least .

Don't get me wrong Manly Al, I can see what you're saying and I agree there's merit in him being there as a stop-gap measure. I also agree about giving Tom Wright plenty of game time for the rest of the season because I'd love to for us to get a headstart on next year. As for options outside the club, I'm honestly not that knowledgeable about who's out there (especially not up and coming juniors) I just have to put my faith in the club making a wise choice and frankly at this point in time that makes me a little nervous.

And having a #9 that can't kick either makes it even worse. This is probably our biggest downfall in attack. We NEED at least 2 kisk options, ideally 3. Fainu kicks.

On another note, I think we are going to lose Kelly through this cap predicament. We need to play some of the upandcomers to ease the cap pain and find/pay a high level 5/8 or we will struggle for years to come.
My 2019 team would be:

Tom
Anderson
Dylan
T Wright
Suli
?
DCE
Kapow
Api/Fainu
AFB
Thommo
Tanga
Jake

Amone
Paseka

etc to make up the 30.

Unfortunately I think our only realistic way forward is to bite a few bullets for 2019 and probably 2020.

My team for 2019 (and would be to boost the speed):

01. Tom Trbojevic
02. Sosaia Feki
03. Brian Kelly
04. Dylan Walker
05. Jade Anderson
06. Tom Wright
07. Daly Cherry-Evans
08. Addin Fonua-Blake
09. Apisai Koroisou
10. Marty Taupau
11. Joel Thompson
12. Curtis Sironen
13. Jake Trbojevic

14. Manase Fainu
15. Kelepi Tanginoa
16. Taniela Paseka
17. Moses Suli

Here are my post season transactions:
X Acquisition: Sosaia Feki

X Released: Darcy Lussick
X Released: Jorge Taufua

X Unsigned: Jackson Hastings
X Unsigned: Jonathan Wright
X Unsigned: Lewis Brown
X Unsigned: Akuila Uate

X Signed Elsewhere: Shaun Lane
X Signed Elsewhere: Jack Gosiewski

X Retired: Nate Myles

NSW Cup (Blacktown team) - would be quite experienced and competitive:

01. Honeti Tuha
02. Tevita Funa
03. Matthew Wright
04. Brad Parker
05. John Folau
06. Lachlan Croker
07. Trent Hodkinson
08. Lloyd Perrett
09. Joey Lussick
10. Jacob Loko
11. Frank Winterstein
12. Tyler Cassel
13. Josh Martin

14. Cody Nelson
15. Toafofoa Sipley
16. James Hasson
17. Tom Amone

If you gave me the option of Taufua or Feki 100 times, I'd answer Taufua straight away 99 times, and the 100th time I'd think about it for a couple of seconds and answer Taufua

A player id be interested in at the right price, and it would need to be with the Dogs paying some of his bill, would be Hopoate. Hasn't come back as the superstar he left us as in 2011, but he still has all those touches of quality with the ability to play FB, Wing and Centre, the role Matt Wright does for us at the moment. As I write this he puts on a try for Tonga

after watching the test last night i was thinking the exact same. Hoppa would be a great option for us at fullback or centre. I feel like he is probably safer than tommy turbo at the back. They could alternate positions throughout the game and keep the defense wondering. I just feel like he (tommy) would be best as a roaming centre. If you had someone to tip the ball onto him and create the space outside for him as opposed to him being the one to create every left side opportunity he would be next to unstoppable. I feel like he gets targeted and thats why he gets pushed too tight to the sideline and is sometimes forced to make ad lib decisions when passing to his outside men.

The other brisbane winger who is off contract, Oates? Said he wants to say but what does that mean.

Begs the question. We have Cartwright, Barrett, Gorman, Fulton and others in and around the club. How many years of being in the NRL industry would that add up to?

They don't know amongst them all someone who'd not only fill, but excel at this position?

Maybe we are advertising to find the best available. But jeez.

Wouldn’t recruit anyone until we move Barrett on and get a coach who can actually coach 🙂
