Speed thrills !!!

Sotty Donald was as fast as I've seen. In 15/20 years time, Troy Leo will be on lists like this!

With both fully fit and in their prime....a race between Donald and Snake would have been something to behold.
Who the fck is Troy Leo feathered friend ?

I do love pure Pace - The feeling that once you have found some open space it's try time and cheering the flying Seaeagle to the line
knowing....it's 100% a 4-6 points coming up - Top thread !!
PS) Chariots Offiah had some pace and there was that Odenryan? (Eels)

Larry Corowa was lightning quick. Irvine, Snake and Gartner were the fastest players for Manly in my opinion. Johnny Gibbs was very quick over a short distance.

Hasn't rated a mention as an out and out sprinter which is fair enough, but over 30-40m a certain Bob Fulton at his peak had a devastating turn of pace. His speed seemed to go to another level around 1973-4, I recall going to Brookie and watching him get the ball and it always seemed almost inevitable he'd make it to the line. Maybe my memory was impressionable, being very young and awe-struck back then!
But check his second grand final try vs Sharks in 73 you'll see what I mean. He burned Rick Bourke and Steve Rogers, and both those guys had great natural speed
(at 4.50)

Ok mate , Try this
What is the fastest Manly players you have seen in the back line no1 to no5 ?

In my time (since 1982)....

FB - Brett Stewart
WG - Andrew Frew
CE - Dale Shearer
CE - Michael O'Connor
WG - Scott Donald

According to the book by Thomas Keneally, early in his career when he was training as a sprinter, Des Hasler did a 10.8 for the 100. This is the same as Martin Offiah's best recorded time.

From what I have heard, Snake apparently did a 10.4 early in his career at Manly training.

@BOZO ... this article would have been your wet dream lol. Speed Speed Speed.

If I could put together an all-time fastest Manly team (1-13), it would be (and only in the positions they played for Manly):

Brett Stewart, Ken Irvine, Dale Shearer, Russel Gartner, Johnny Bliss, Dylan Walker, Daly Cherry-Evans, Brenton Lawrence, Mal Cochrane, Daniel Gartner, Steve Menzies, Tony Williams, Des Hasler.

Manly games played in those positions....

FB - Brett Stewart - 233
WG - Ken Irvine - 60
CE - Dale Shearer - 35
CE - Russel Gartner - ??
WG - Johnny Bliss - 71
FE - Dylan Walker - 23
HB - Daly Cherry-Evans - 195
PR - Brenton Lawrence - 74
HK - Mal Cochrane - 118
PR - Daniel Gartner - 5
SR - Steve Menzies - 196
SR - Tony Williams - 21
LK - Des Hasler - 50

Snake, Mongo Irvine, Bliss, DCE and Mal Cochrane are the only ones who played their whole first grade careers with us in the same position. At least, they started all games in those positions. Not sure if Frog Eyes played all games at centre or if some were on the wing. BJ only played front row for us, but did play a number of games from the bench.

I would probably swap Tony Williams for Watmough, and Buhrer for Cochrane only because I don’t recall Mal being quick.

I remember Frog playing only centre for Manly.

I believe Mal Cochrane played a lot of his junior footy on the wing which is why I chose him. Otherwise I would have gone for either Ferris or Tooves who was bloody quick off the mark, the quickest I've seen for a dummy half.

T-Rex was also a converted winger and wasn't slow by any means. A race between he and Choc could have been interesting, but my money would be on the dinosaur, well, the one with the dinosaur nickname at least lol.

I remember reading somewhere that Brett clocked a time over 100m that would have qualified him for the Australian track team.

I could be wrong but I thought that it was under 11sec????

Don’t think I’ve seen a faster prop than BJ at any club
