Ex-referees boss Bernard Sutton joins Melbourne Storm as a consultant

The rich just keep getting richer with premiers Melbourne pulling off a wily move to keep the NRL juggernauts one step ahead of the competition for 2021.

Fresh off their grand final victory over Penrith In October, Craig Bellamy has wasted little time mounting a title defence addressing on-field discipline issues by appointing former NRL referees boss Bernard Sutton as a consultant for 2021.

After making his debut as an NRL referee in 2007, Sutton stepped down as the code's general manager of elite officiating at the end of last year and will aim to help the team limit penalties and adapt to rule changes, according to Storm football manager Frank Ponissi.


"It will be a positive for our club to tap into Bernard's expertise and experience to have him available to help us continue to improve our on-field discipline," Ponissi said.

"We are always looking at those one-percenters and what we can do to make ourselves better.


"Reducing the number of penalties we concede is one area we have targeted for improvement as is adapting to the new laws to be introduced in 2021.

"Bernard will working directly with our coaches in a role that's very similar that we had another ex-NRL referee Adam Devcich fill with us in 2019.

Still on about the shed, I didn't pick you as an OHS type Terry, I thought you'd be a cut the red tape kind of guy!
As for hiring refs as consultants, I'm sure we've done that in the past, any team sufficiently cashed up would do that, while the paupers can cry foul (or fowl, as the case may be)

A club is made up of administrators , coaches , players and club members and the club is as powerful as all those that contribute in a big way

Hardly surprising but the NRL decision is a fait accompli. Don't expect consistency though, it's overrated......

"Regardless of the outcome in Suaalii’s application before the Commission, V’landys reiterated the age rule will remain unchanged.

“It was never going to be a blanket change to the rule. There is a rule that gives the Commission discretion on all rules,” V’landys said.

“We didn’t want rules that are too prescriptive and at times not in the best interest of the games.

“So the age rule is still there. But we can consider specific cases.”

No deadline has been placed on the Roosters to finalise the application but a resolution is expected “soon”.

V’landys also credited the professionalism in which the Roosters have handled the situation.
“The Roosters have taken this process very seriously because they want to make sure they are doing the right thing,” he said.

This is an example of why I am luke warm about V’Landys. There is absolutely no reason for him to say that about the Roosters (or even comment on the matter - I’d say it is more for the CEO), yet he does.
