Race to remember
One of the most memorable Easter meetings was staged on Monday, April 15, 1974, when legendary pacers Hondo Grattan and Paleface Adios went head-to-head at Forbes Showground.
The Bathurst and Temora horses, trained by Tony Turnbull and Colin Pike respectively, took part in the Special Invitation Free for All over 1680 metres at the Forbes track, drawing more than 3000 spectators.
The five horses in the race had won more than 130 races between them, led by the two-time Inter-Dominion champion Hondo Grattan.
However the race favourite, the ‘Bathurst Bulldog’ was upstaged by the ‘Temora Tornado’ and finished fourth behind Paleface Adios, the outsider Glamour Guy and King Frost.
As reported in the Advocate the next day, race caller John Kerwick congratulated the Forbes club for organising what he believed was the “classiest field of pacers ever to contest a mile race in the western districts”.
The race helped attract a record crowd, with trots enthusiasts packing all vantage points for a glimpse of the champions.
I won $10 on this race (thanks Dad) - very quickly converted to a large quantity of 1 cent lollies
