What the hell is he talking about? I like to think that as a culture we have a lot stronger connection to ex players than most other clubs. DCE looks like being the exception to the rule, and the only fault the club has is being responsible to a salary cap that means we cannot offer a 2 year multi million dollar contract to a 37 year old half back.

Wally is probably basing his views on what happened to his great friend Paul Vautin. Fatty had to leave Manly after he was on $90k & (after a poor 1989) only offered him $50k for the next season. The Roosters took him on, but he was never the same & retired after 2 years at the chooks.

No mate - spoke directly to Wally about this and it was the Qld Chief Executive at the time Ron McCauliffe who stopped the move....he was keen to come, as was Miles

The smart thing for everyone at the club, and the former greats, to do is just to shut up and let this season play out.

Once he's gone they can air out their dirty laundry, if it happens now it just destabilises the club.

From what I remember Lewis and Miles were offered big money to come to Manly with backing from Kerry Packer.
There was concern the amount might offend other players so it was presented as X% for footy and Y% for television work.
They had a deal with the QRL if they matched an offer from NSW they would have to stay, when they told the QRL they are off to Manly they said no we are matching the footy offer and the TV offer has nothing to do with it so your staying as the deal is for footy contracts only.
Wally is still probably dirty on Manly as that cost him some decent coin at the time.

He was pretty disappointed after being blocked from the move and all these years later, seemed frustrated.
Regardless of the many opinions on Wally, is actually a down to earth friendly bloke and IF he and Miles played at Manly, very confident an extra premiership or 2 would have followed.
