The Daly Cherrygraph

A lot of ‘DCE wasn’t that bad’ and that’s true but missing the point a little. He’s not there for ‘wasn’t that bad’, he’s the captain and halfback. I think that’s the point of the criticism levelled at him. There’s not a lot of creativity in Daly at SOO level. He just goes through the motions but the Maroons are looking for a spark. Lots of NRL players would put a 7 on their back and be ‘OK’. QLD need someone elite that will spark them; that wasn’t Daly last night, hence the criticism.

He isn’t a running threat and he doesn’t get to torch the opposition with his ad lib footy because the defence is elite. So that leaves…? Some kicking and some dishing. That ain’t gonna cut it.

I think a lot of the criticism is because of his off field crap, which generates a lot of (deserved) hate. In terms of last nights game, I still think he was better than the other 3 halves on the field, though none were great. I’m no DCE fan, but Andrew Johns, JT and Cronk would have looked ordinary behind that qld pack last night, given the dominance of the nsw pack.

As for spark, I think that’s more on Munsters shoulders.

DCE was ordinary, as was Munster behind a badly beaten pack.
Haas owned the middle.
Not to defend DCE, but the bloke who has really fallen from grace at NRL level and again last night is Ponga who has been non existent
How good is haas. We should have thrown millions at him and surrounded him with forwards from nsw cup on match payment only. Would be a better pack than what we have now.

Mitch Moses is probably the player I dislike most in the game, but I think he was more effective than the other halves on the field last night. He played over the advantage line, made a line break, put Angus C into space a couple of times, and defended strongly. I actually thought Cleary was effective as well and his goal kicking gave off the impression he was below par.

QLD played a very structured game last night with Munster exclusively on the left and Daly on the right; so the sparks on both of them.

I also dislike Moses intensely. I just think the DCE criticism from that game is over the top. Given nsw forward domination, they should have won by a lot more, which I put down to our halves. I’d prefer a Moses/Laui combination, but that ain’t happening. If I was a qld fan, I’d prefer a Deardon/DCE combination, but like Cleary, Munster is an untouchable, so that ain’t happening either.

I hardly think a multi millionaire who will continue to earn millions from the media when he retires is motivated by $30k match payments. It’s chump change.
It's a huge assumption that there's a media job waiting for him. Media is cut throat about ratings and it's hard to imagine what he might bring.

He is not popular among fans, so he's not bringing an audience.

The current Nine commentators seem to be luke warm on him and have jumped right on to the Dump DCE bandwagon at the first opportunity.

He pretends to be articulate (and manages to fool some of the lower IQ fans) but he uses an awful lot of wrong big words in the wrong places.

Is there any evidence he can analyse a game?

I'm not sure that he's relatable to Joe Public.

Huge assumption

If he appears on any of my screens in the future, I’ll be switching channels, that’s a given, the only reason I ever tolerated the bloke was the jumper he pulled on each weekend of the footy season…….

Hammer meet nail. What Daly thinks of himself doesn’t mesh with the opinion of the vast majority.

He has traded his legacy for some magic beans that may or may not sprout, and may or may not lead to (more) golden eggs

Easy to forget that its only two years ago since DCE was king of SOO. Even last year, though the Blues won 2-1, he was outstanding. This is one game and he was surrounded by several key players off their game. And despite the Sydney news service bias, they were hardly thrashed. Manly's loss to Parramatta was a thrashing (without DCE I note, but lest blame him for that while we're at it)

As for the Cleary-DCE issue, its far easier to be considered the best when your team is at the top. How many former Greats played for sides that didn't win a premiership. An obvious bias of perspective.

As for DCE leaving us, I had accepted the fact a year or two ago that he would retire at the end of '25. None of the greats from Manly I can recall, playing in their twilight years, were outstanding when they transferred to other clubs for a final pay out. Fulton, Vautin, Hasler, Glen Stewart, Watmough, just to name a few. None seriously impacted in their last NRL/ARL club. So what are we concerned about. DCE's best years are behind him. Time to move on and just reminisce about his glory days, and there were many.

People live in their own worlds of perception which is subjective. I think he significantly underestimated his loss of popularity. A death knell was when he was interviewed after being selected for origin 1 and was foolish enough to focus on himself and talk about two interested clubs. IMO It showed disrespect to the Maroon jumper.

fair enough, I can see where you’re coming from.

Budgie, I would dispute one issue here. Certainly DCE polarises fans, for reasons that are somewhat complex. However, there seem to be many who admire the oft criticised captain, including this little black duck. I note several on this site who think well of him so the correct statement is he's not popular among one section of the supporters. A little picky but must be said.
