I’m so old, I remember our bread being home delivered in the back of a Holden panel van. The back of the van was full of loaves straight from the bakers oven. That was also in the days of the paper boy, milk deliveries in glass bottles and the dunny man.

.... Luxury .... before breakfast, which was a mouthful of sawdust, we had to crawl 100 miles to collect water in a can with holes and get back with enough water for mother to wash down her pills

We would have killed for a whole mouthful of sawdust. We had to share a mouthful amongst 12 kids, and that was only when dad hadn’t drunk all his wages at the pub on Friday night.

I remember the bread was wrapped in wax paper & not in plastic bags like it is now.

For milk we had a cow. The bucket would have about 3” of warm water to wash the udder of the cow.
I would milk straight into the water to get a head start. Kids, eh.

We were a bit tight for money growing up in a single parent family, so rarely got to order lunch at the canteen. It was often Vogel multigrain bread from the freezer with butter and Vegemite… 🤮 But those occasions when we did get to put in the brown paper bag orders with the coins inside were special ☺️🙏

Yeah we were the same. It was real special to get a lunch order!!
