The Daly Cherrygraph

Something deeply uncomfortable about the current media pile-on now with DCE. Of course we Manly die-hards are piling onto the bugger - but to see others, such as those not-very-highly-respected media pundits and 'experts' also piling onto someone who's still wearing Manly colours .... doesn't make me feel better.

Sudden thought. .. DCE's decision to publicly reject Manly while still our captain, with a full season to go, has offended our most basic expectations of sporting team culture. You stick together, you support your teammates and your club, you deal with issues discreetly inside the 4 walls, ie do not publicly embarrass your club and mates by ****ting in your own nest and broadcasting it on Channel 9.

We (at least a lot of us here on ST) are appalled or even outraged by Daly - our longstanding, decorated club captain and premiership winner - failing to understand this basic aspect of rugby league - indeed, team sport - culture.

Yet here's the thought. Maybe it is Daly who does get it, and we fans who are still labouring under romantic delusions of neighbourhood games and 'sporting team culture'.

Daly gets it. NRL is not sport, certainly not sport in the way we understand junior or local comps we played in for fun, or even the game as it became semi-professional. It's becoming Rollerball.

The post-super league era has produced an entertainment product - "NRL" - in which franchises sell merchandise and players get their bodies and even brains turned to mush for our viewing entertainment. In this show, the players' survival becomes their paramount consideration. They'll stick together on-field in their mutual interest, and off-field in enterprise bargaining. But loyalty to their franchise? When franchises routinely make ruthless decisions on players?

We fans are stuck with this dedication to the colours, imprinted on our psyche from years past. DCE tossed our romantic delusion in the bin, and that hurt. But is it really DCE who doesn't understand what it's all about - or is it us!!

Not sure, just a thought that came to mind as I typed 🤷‍♂️
Anyhow - Go Manly, piss off DCE!
From a player perspective , most ( not all ) are only interested in the $$$$$

They’ll sing the team song, they’ll greet the fans blah blah but ultimately it’s “ show me the money “.

However if you are brought up in the junior system , progress through the levels & eventually get to play first grade , and you only intend to play for that club you are truly , a clubman.

We have a few of those , mostly not though.

So I don’t think things have changed really it just depends on where you come from ( or go to ) to complete the journey.

Whereas us fans , we are stuck for life.

The Chaser was a Broncos reject , came here fur a first grade start , got paid huge dollars but clearly never really a “ Manly man”.

Insightful commentary @SeaEagleRock8

We, the fans, are the horde. Unruly and ruthless in our illogical and primal dedication to our club. At the same time, we indirectly pay the players for our entertainment. If DCE truly understood what it's really all about, he would have considered the ramifications of his decisions and acted accordingly.

A professionally paid player can show respect for his/her employer and fan base, whilst still being very capable of making choices that best serve them and their families personally.

Personally, I think if he retires, it's one of the greatest own goals of all time; so bad in fact that he has no choice but to play on. Otherwise, his victory lap - i.e. final season - simply involved pissing off his own supporter base, tarnishing his legacy at the club, and derailing the entire season; that's some parting gift and some of sort of horrible way to say goodbye.

I don't think there's even the slightest chance he retires for that reason.

I know there's a lot of emotion around the way he's handled things and I totally get it, but the sight of him looking dejected around his wife and kids reminded me that it's only a game and he's only human. I can't hate the guy, even if he's done this to himself.
It seems your basic premise is that it will get better for him next year and thus no chance he will retire this year......

only 13 to go.....

Why do you support Manly if it’s just another rollerball franchise? Sport has always been about tribalism. If DCE “gets it” that it’s ok to dump on a club that paid you millions, made captain and its longest serving player, then that just proves us fans actually “get it” by hating his guts.

It's sad how this guys been our half back for about 15 years and I don't even care that he's leaving. In fact I'm looking forward to seeing the back of him and Fogarty playing in the 7 for us. I didn't watch the Tigers game but from what I've read it was his worst and ours ever. Seibold needs to be punted into the sun post haste.

Yep, the chaser milked us dry, chewed us up and spat us out, now he thinks he can see greener pastures at the Roosters, and he's probably right, so he basically says to his teammates, " thanks guys, been a pleasure playing with you, but I need better players around me, thanks for the memories".
It's like a guy telling his wife, I enjoyed my time with you, however in six months time I'll be leaving you for someone else, it totally destabilised the team the way it was all announced, he should have just left last year when all this $hit hit the fan, or kept his mouth shut and waited until the season was over.

The correct play , shutting the **** up until the end of the season.
