He’s the master of spinning media narratives and the club captain. It’s just a PR line and nothing more. The narrative around dce not rating seibold somewhat takes a hit in my mind when you think back to DCE talking in a presser after a loss about how he went away from the coach's instructions, and played a different game plan.
Is that something he would say if he went away from the game plan, whether in the heat of the battle or deliberately. It sounds like an admittance he made an error and should have played the game plan - made by a coach he apparently doesn't think can coach.
I may be wrong, wouldn't be the first time.
They are going to have to try harder than that to sway public opinion![]()
Why a text message from Benji left Daly Cherry-Evans emotional
Benji Marshall was forced to leave his beloved Wests Tigers in 2013. So a message from the coach in the lead-up to DCE’s 350th NRL game really hit home.www.smh.com.au
I think where this ‘honourable’ argument falls apart is evinced in the 100% Footy broadcast. That caused all sorts of problems and wasn’t the respectful and ‘honourable’ way to go about it. I agree he’s had a falling out and I suspect it was to do with Hasler’s treatment. Either way, he doesn’t like someone. I also agree it probably wasn’t motivated by money but also think he’d be getting more than a great deal at the Chooks, which is why they were sounded out by his manager for a contract. He’d be set up post football for sure, in ways Manly could never afford to offer.Despite all the question marks aimed at DCE, what I argued long ago seems to remain the most probable. DCE had a falling out with some element of the Manly admin, whether its to do with the coach, the management, the owner, is not being said, and given his decision I dont think it had anything to do with money. The fact he would accept a quite low one year salary at SC of $500,000 and from the start of 2025 declare he wouldn't play with Manly, even though its reported he was offered substantially more to stay, seems to testify to that. I know some will argue that he was being given a car or an offer of coaching, but I suspect he could have got that at Manly. As has been shown following the Titans issue, DCE is very private about his affairs and despite being besmirched, doesn't react through the media but rather through action.
If greed had been the fundamental issue he would have bitten the bullet, put up with what was upsetting him, and taken the money offered by the Sea Eagles. He didn't. He stuck to what he obviously considers his principles. I disagree with many on this forum in that I think basically DCE is honourable. He just doesn't seek to defend himself publicly. He keeps his cards close to his chest. And the media and fans therefore have free rein to speculate unhindered.
I think you have most of that right, though disagree with the honourable and particularly the 'he's a private person'. Private people don't need to make announcements when there is nothing to really announce until you have signed with another club. Don't sell me he was doing the club a favour, that could have been done over the phone or in person.Despite all the question marks aimed at DCE, what I argued long ago seems to remain the most probable.
