New Zealand rugby league bosses have criticised Australia's "disrespectful" response to the traditional haka pre-match challenge after it almost sparked an all-in brawl at a junior international in Auckland.

Good, so they should disrespect them.
Isn't NZ doing a Haka when they know the enemy won't also disrespectful?

Anyone who walks out on a field wearing a different jersey to you is a c*nt and should be treated that way. Anybody in the crowd supporting a different team to you is a c*nt and should be treated that way.

Who cares what some wanker wearing the wrong shirt thinks? As soon as a Kiwi stepped on the halfway line, the nearest Aussie should have belted him in the gob. Hopefully he'd bite his stupid tongue off.

I'm sick of all this good sport and respect crap. You are involved in sport to win or see your team win. A bunch of other people are out there to see that you don't get what you want, that you don't achieve your goals or see the very thing that you paid money to see. Why should you respect that?

Here's a couple. Enjoy.

I think the reaction from over the ditch is a bit precious.

If the Piwis are allowed to do a throat slitting gesture as part of their haka, then why should they object to the opposition team moving up and getting in their face??

Time to move on from this.

Yeah some of the Kiwi's seem to be getting over sensitive about this IMO.

From what I know, the Haka is throwing out a challenge. Yet they tend to have a whinge when some accepts that challenge in a manner similar to what the Junior Kangaroos did. Remember the crap that went on about it after the Kangaroos did it before the 2008 World Cup Final? Though the senior team at least kept a 1m distance. IIRC there was the same BS said when the Wallabies first did it to the All Blacks about 15 or so years ago. The Kiwi's had a whinge that it was disrespectful.

If they are going to throw out a challenge by doing the Haka, then they should be prepared to have the challenge accepted.

Its like they don't like being upstaged at their own game so to speak.

The worst part though is that every time an Aussie league or union team has done this type of response to the Haka......they've lost the game.

The Welsh had the right idea. For one test, they made the kiwi's do the haka in the dressing room as they said it gave the kiwi's 'too much of an advantage' to perform it on the ground.

To be fair, most kiwi's I've met say 'we don't care what the opposition do during the haka....we're going to smash you anyway!' - with a smile on their face.

But agreed...some claim that it's not a reason to fight, it's a challenge...whilst walking forward into your face and sometimes doing the throat slitting gesture.
(I'd like to think if someone was doing that to me...they'd be prepared to have their nose pushed through to the back of their head.).........

Then if you react in any other way other than standing their looking submissive....they get all cry baby and indignant about it.

I'd prefer to see the team doing warm up drills and keeping warm whilst the haka goes on. No sense in having your muscles cool down whilst they stay warm and primed.

I think the Aussies should take cameras and video it next time. Giving it social media exposure, the ultimate in respect

Interesting article on this very topic.

I believe the Haka should only be performed on New Zealand soil. When the Kiwis are the visiting team play both national anthems then get on with the game!

Yep.

I get it and respect it for what it is as a Maori thing; but I find it somewhat perplexing that "non Maori's" ( sorry, not sure of the PC term ) do it too.
Seeing the likes of Nightingale, Eastwood, Foran, etc doing it doesn't make sense to me.

Even though I'm Maori and are very proud of my culture, I definitely understand where other people and countries are coming from in taking exception to it nowadays. I know they are respectful of it but some feel it is an unfair advantage or special treatment is given to NZ teams and I can agree with that also.

I personally think as some have mentioned the Haka should only be performed at home or optional to the host nation when playing away. I also believe that opposition should be given the chance to reply to it within reason. I personally have no problem teams advancing and getting up close and personal, though caution is advised due to the hyped state those performing the Haka can be in.

I guess the reason why the Haka is still prevalent in sport today is mainly due to the fact it has become a tradition within a tradition. Due to the All Blacks originally using it since 1888 it has become as much a part of the protocol of pre game rituals as the national anthems. Obviously other NZ sports including Rugby League have taken it on since then to varied success.

I do believe the All Blacks status as one of the greatest sports teams plays a part in the Haka being viewed as sacred and retained for so long. I'm pretty sure the Tall Blacks Haka isn't respected as much as the All Blacks due to their status in world basketball lol. The commercial element as well as entertainment factor also play a part as well.

While I personally love the Haka and what it represents, I would have no problem if they did exclude it from Sports. I do see how it can be viewed as force feeding our culture onto others which is possibly a valid point.

I will say this however, nothing gives me goose bumps and makes the hair on my neck stand up when I here the Haka performed. I myself have performed the Haka many times and it is a very savage, intense and powerful feeling.

I guess it would look odd if there was half the team performing the Haka and the other half standing around lol. Wouldn't speak much about the unity of a team. Also Nightingale and Eastwood are actually both of Maori descent. You cant read a book by its cover these days aye. I have children that are just as light skinned as them, yet I'm a brown Maori lol.

I wonder if the Vikings had time to perform a Haka every time they got off the boat?

Rare footage of some Silvertails Forums users in full Viking mode.

Whilst I hate the throat slitting version of the haka.....(and Isaac luke)

I also love it when other teams stand up to it.

But then I hate how the NZ admin whine and cry about it.
