The 30-year wait for an upgrade to Brookvale Oval might be over

THE 30-year wait to fix dilapidated Brookvale Oval may nearly be over.

Manly chairman Scott Penn hopes to announce the construction of a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence at the northern end of Lottoland within the next four to six weeks.

It would be the first, vital step towards a major upgrade for a famous old footy ground seemingly left neglected and run down.

NRL DAILY: Barrett strikes back against Penn family

SLAMMED: Penn hits out at Barrett

The Brookvale Centre of Excellence would house the club’s football operations, coaching staff, administration and have 3000 undercover seats out front.

With three training fields available, the team would continue to train the majority of each week out of the Academy of Sport at Narrabeen.

“We are making progress. To be honest, we are little bit sick of talking about it,” Penn said. “We are really wanting to focus on action and we have a master plan already in place.

“It’s now about getting stage one away and we’re hopeful we can do that in the next month or so, in terms of locking it down so we can then come out, announce it, and get things under way.

“The club is working very closely with local and State Government to make sure we have the right Centre of Excellence at Lottoland that would befit an NRL club. We are still a way away but there are certainly positive and proactive conversations going on.

“We are still somewhat at the behest of Government in terms of announcement timing so we can’t promise anything but hopefully by the end of the year we’ll be clear.”

Penn, whose family has injected $12 million into Manly and faces another $1.5 million outlay for this year, claimed after the Centre of Excellence was approved, he and CEO Lyall Gorman could move forward to implement a “broader master plan.”

“We are already in strong dialogue with a number of potential options, in terms of colleges and other facilities, in terms of commercial development, in some form a public-private partnership, to really activate the whole site,” he said.

“Brookvale, the area, deserves an activated precinct. We need to get an outcome at Brookvale, that’s what we need to do. We want to optimise the entire Brookvale precinct.”

Penn bristled at unfounded speculation he wanted to take Manly away from Brookvale. And the Sea Eagles co-owner claimed he and his family had no intention of walking away from the club.

“Yes, there has been interest but, no, we’re not looking to sell,” he said.

In fact, Penn said he wanted to increase his role at the club, which could seek to launch a New York club to play England’s Super League, a proposal revealed last year in The Daily Telegraph.

“We are looking at potential expansion. We absolutely wouldn’t rule out a New York team. “We haven’t put a lot of effort into it as yet but it’s certainly of interest. I am spending an increasing amount of time over there,” Penn said.

What a crock of FAKE NEWS.
When a journo uses the words "may" and "nearly" be stirred but not shaken. These are words that actually mean "a very slim possibility".
Also, the whole Centre of Excellence thing doesn't make sense. They are going to build it at Brookie but still train at Narrabeen?
What 'Excellence' will there be in this so-called Centre that is not already at Narrabeen?
FAKE NEWS

Will believe it when I see it.

At the start of this story it states "within the next four to six weeks".
Read further and it states "hopefully by the end of the year"
Which is it?
Is this happening at Lottoland or La La Land?
Also, who speaks like this: “We are already in strong dialogue with a number of potential options, in terms of colleges.
What the hell does that mean? Are we going to have a Sea Eagle College? Or is this just another Bird Brain idea?

I'm happy to build a team around Kane Elgey, Tom and Jake, AFB, Api, Thompson and Kelly. No one else so piss the rest of them off. Then rebuild with plenty of money with people that want to buy in to our culture.

So most people have been asking for the Penn’s to start doing something about improvement to facilities etc & as soon as some positive news comes out they are shot down. Seems nothing is good enough for some!!!
I was in PR for 40 years and I used to write this obfuscation crap for a living. As a journo I also covered Federal politics in Canberra so I know what Polly-waffle is.
If this story was factual it would be about the DA being approved by Council. A firm construction timeline. CGIs of the Centre. A photo of Gladys or the local member Hazzard in a hard hat on site, a detailed description of what the building would contain and how the 3,000 covered seats dovetail into the project. Who is building it? Who is paying for it? How much are the Penns putting into it? Who will own it - the Sea Eagles, the Council, the NSW Government . . .?
How many PR stories have we read about the rebuild of Brookie, the new eastern grandstand, the money pledged for an upgrade?
What's the point, anyway, of having the club's football operations at Brookie when the team's training facilities are at Narrabeen.
Please. When you read such powder-puff pieces delve a little deeper into the motifs for such announcements. Could it be that the Penns are trying to shovel their reputations out of the sewer? And when this doesn't come to fruition they can blame the Council for not co-operating.

Only because we recognize the storyline from 2015 @:(

Launch the DT articles besmirching the Coach, Brookie rebuild plans, yadda yadda yadda :banghead:

Sad reflection of Manly's culture :tmi:

I'm happy to build a team around Kane Elgey, Tom and Jake, AFB, Api, Thompson and Kelly. No one else so piss the rest of them off. Then rebuild with plenty of money with people that want to buy in to our culture.

Teams very, very young
1. Tommy 21
2. Jorge 26
3. Kelly 22
4. Walks 23
5. Suli 20
6. Elgey 24
7. DCE 29

Average age of the backline 23. They could almost stay together for 5-6 years

8. AFB 22
9. Api 25
10. Marty 28
11. Thommo 29
12. Siro 25
13. Jake 24

Average age of the forwards 25.

14. Fainu 19
15. Paseka 20
16. Tanginoa 24
17. Carty 23

Average age of our bench 21.

Actually, the average age of that whole team would be 23. Here is the current average ages (so we could both be getting younger, as well as being the youngest team in the league by some):

Team (2018) Average Age
North Queensland Cowboys 27.49
Cronulla Sharks 27.27
Parramatta Eels 27.10
St George Illawarra Dragons 26.88
Wests Tigers 26.77
New Zealand Warriors 26.4
Melbourne Storm 26.38
Sydney Roosters 26.38
Canberra Raiders 26.16
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 25.99
Gold Coast Titans 25.97
Newcastle Knights 25.74
South Sydney Rabbitohs 25.72
Manly Sea Eagles 25.43
Brisbane Broncos 25.42
Penrith Panthers 25.19

That's why I'm saying consistency is the key here. Keep it together as long as possible. Build something special. Just need the right front office and coaching.

Typical crap they release when ever pressure is on the club. Nothing will be built ever.
