Totally lost

That's correct, I'm totally befuddled when it comes to Hastings and Brown on the bench. Brown has been playing around ten minutes a game. It's not like he comes on and carves up either. I think he's been a little better so far this season, however when taken in context that is irrelevant. One of Brown or Hastings provides ample injury cover. Granted that Shaun Lane may not be the greatest lateral defender running around. But if you're using Brown for ten minutes, then surely a raw boned 118kg forward provides more impact if only used for such a small portion of the game. It's not as if Lane is going to be expected to play sixty minutes. Hastings and Lane displayed this with a beautifully worked try late against the Dogs. A big man with footwork hitting a hole at pace is a fantastic weapon to have up your sleeve late in the game (especially against a big pack like the Dogs and Raiders. It's not s if Barrett hasn't seen it produce (as was clearly evident against the Dogs) yet he goes with Brown and Hastings again. Unbelievable.

We don't need brown but Baz doesn't have the balls to punt him. Hastings would be great if he got more minutes so we could also get more out of Api. Hastings should come on for 20 or 30 minutes in between to give Api a rest. Friend and Hastings sharing the role at the roosters was very effective and improved friend so he could have more impact.

I got lost today as well, although not totally.

I'm at a place called Lara Wetlands ( near Barcaldine ), took a wrong turn and 30 kms of bulldust later " whoops".

But now settled down, Sat dish up, Foxtel working and surprise surprise 1 bar of Telstra 3G.

Sorry to be technical but it was against the Cowboys. Lane (and Bainbridge) got dropped when Kapow and AFB returned for the Dogs game.

But otherwise you are quite correct.

A lot of teams carry a player on their bench who is seldom used. Think about all those times Des would keep someone like Vic Mauro on the bench and they'd be lucky to see 5 minutes on the field.

I think having Hastings and Brown is basically a method of covering all your bases injury wise, rather than using the extra bench spot on a forward who will get next to no game time.

I'd agree with you that many coaches have done it and/or continue to do it. I'd also argue that it is a waste. Drop Brown for Hastings and we still have plenty of coverage across the park. Brown literally offers nothing that Hastings and Sironen don't already.

When was the last time Lane had an impact in a game? It wasn't against the cowboys cause that game was all but done.

He is a long way from being called an impact player.
