Take the positives. The team won in atrocious conditions and against some dodgy decisions. It's not a fair comp. imagine our for and against if we played these pretenders on a dry sunny brookvale Sunday. It is what it is and it's a lesson to learn.

It could be that wet on grand final day and at least now the team know how to play in those conditions.

And the best thing of all is they didn't drop their heads after multiple dud calls. That's on Cherry. He is doing great.

The Uate try was a genuine mistake, the referee was in panic mode after that...
They don't drop Refs for 'mistakes' 😉but this guy probably will be for a genuine mistake.
Genuine mistakes can not be tolerated, it tears at the fabric of the game!

The referees are tough on defending teams especially when they defend their line. I think the biggest issues for referees is that they have been coached so much to outsource big decisions that when one of them makes a call they get crucified. Watching the game over the years, a players body language normally tells you if he has scored or not. To be fair to Uate, everyone at the ground at the time thought it was a try until the replay showed otherwise. The forward passes are a joke now. You see try's disallowed from marginal ones and obvious ones, especially from dummy half, ignored. I do not understand why forward passes are allowed to be called by a touch judge to assist the referee yet if a try is awarded the video ref is not able to change the ruling. The bunker has only added to the confusion!

Inconsistency in games, and from game to game , I reckon that's the complaints I see most from fans on social media.

What's a penalty this week, isn't next , or even later in the same round, and worse even in the same game.

I'm sure it's the replays that are shining the light on all this but the current state of officialdom is about as bad as it's ever been.

If a druggo hand knocks the ball from a Sea Eagle then said Sea Eagle lands on ball over the try line is that not a try?

Back in the day, the Referee's Association was, if not independent at least maintained an arms length relationship with the governing body, the NSWRL. They were given the Rugby League rule book and were told to referee games to the rules on an "impartial basis"

The rot started, when in the wisdom of the NRL they brought the referee's in house, employed them full time. They then started to advise them how to "interpret" certain rules on a weekly or even game to game basis "for the good of the game".

The ref's went from a supposed fair adjudicator to career minded functionaries and politicians eager to please their masters.

There were so many frustrating elements
I was not at the game, but the time laying on Manly players in the ruck was lenient to say the least all night....and damn they were up fast, almost like they were back 6-7 not 10.
Also had all the momentum till that dubious 40/20 call, the media tended to forget about....
To be fair, the Knights hung in tough, Manly were not at their best , the weather evened the game a fair bit and also dropped the ball on 3 occasions with certain tries beckoning and their first try off a pinball ricochet was extremely lucky...to get the 2 points when it's all weighed up in a game I believe we would have lost in 2016, is pretty handy in hindsight.

Re the Uata try: Q. Since when do we start watching sport in slow motion? A. Since video refs were introduced.
This has always been a bugbear of mine.
Watch the try in real time and it looks like a try. Before video refs it was a try and there would have been no complaints. The same thing happened in the Donkeys V Souffs match when a Brisbane player scored a legitimate try.
But then CSI got involved and said the ball actually had come in contact with a Souffs defender then been regained...
So folks, that is what our once free-flowing sport has become. NRL:CSI - rugby league like you've never seen it (because not all of us have a microscope!)

I think that the introduction of the two on field referee arrangement has contributed to some general inconsistency with some refereeing decisions in recent seasons and with occasional different on field rule interpretations and adjudications and so on . I only mainly watch Manly games but often i have heard the pocket referee make a call after the other ref has cleared the ruck or play the ball area , in certain matches and in general . [ and maybe sometimes justified ] Admittedly the ruck and play the ball area has sped up since i last played footy some time ago and there would then seem to be some more scope for increased ruck penalties then , if deemed warranted . But there is also then probably some sub conscious mentality or tendency for one or both of the on field refs to then wish to make their presence felt with over strict or unnecessary rulings during some matches. Also having the referees as a more professional organization should in theory help matters but as is often mentioned , they are only human and with being under pressure would still be always prone to the occasional mistake and superfluous on field rulings . And again the two on field referee situation probably does not help matters in this regard .

That frame also doesn't show how the ball came loose from the good grasp Uate had on it - Elliott forced it out. Strip's allowed in that situation, and there's no offside in your own in-goal...but the ball was never taken out of play. So a Newcastle player could've grounded it, forced it dead/into touch, or picked it up and run it out of the in-goal - just the same as any Manly player (in an onside position) was entitled to place downward pressure on the ball for a try. Zimples.
