Dylan Walker believes his new role as a middle forward has injected some fresh enthusiasm into his game.

A former Dally M Centre of the Year, Walker has filled the roles of five-eighth and full-back in recent seasons but the brilliant attacking player reinvented himself in 2021.

A player with natural speed and skills and over 163 NRL games to his name, 27-year-old Walker made a big impact for Manly in his 14 appearances from 20 games off the interchange bench last season.

Can only benefit in that role from the experience of last year and a full off season.

Big year for him either to stay on with us or land a good gig elsewhere

Walker – who has scored 32 tries in 101 games for Manly since joining the club in 2016 - admitted the transition to the middle forward role took some time to get used to.

“I wasn’t happy or stoked about it the first time,’’ Walker revealed.

“When you play football, you want to be a starter, but I knew it was my way of getting back into the team.

“I’m a team first mentality type of player. I didn’t think I was just going to jump the queue and hop back into a role somewhere when the team was winning games.

“I had to work my way through it. Coming off the bench, I was just trying to make my mark that I belong in the team.
“I started to learn and enjoy that role of coming on and playing in the middle.

“I got to do a lot of work in there, which I was probably not use to do doing in the outside backs or in the halves.

“Brad Parker and Morgan Harper were playing really well in the centres, so doing that role was the best fit for myself and the team. It just benefitted everyone.

“I really enjoyed it and loved that little role I was playing.”

Walker will this week represent the Maori All Stars team for the third consecutive year in the annual All Stars match.
Maxta for club articles it would be good to put a link or acknowledgment for the story. 😀

Did Dylan have Des standing inthe room when he was saying this bs @:)

if Dylan is so happy, why did he only sign a 1 year extension.

he wants to play centre. Des, let him.

Dylan is apparently good at any game he tries. I notice over the off season he's been playing golf regularly. This probably helps him stay focused & avoid booze etc.

Interesting and candid interview. He did admit he wasn't happy there at first, did what he needed to to get back in the team - and now has found his love of the game again through doing his 'little role'.

I'm betting that if he doesn't get an indication that he is a starter in the next 6 months, he'll be off to the Dolphins.

The skillful and Speedy Dylan has done a great job as middle forward Pig

But if the former NRL centre of the year , premiership winner and Australian rep is not a more super talented centre than both Parker and Harper I am Miss Piggy

It is not surprising that The Maori team has Walker playing in the centres and for good reason

Interesting... Dylan's learnt that he has to work hard to make it in this world and things aren't just handed to him on a platter. Good on him for invigorating and reinventing himself and I'm happy he's happy.

The only part of this interview I disagree with is his comment about how he loved that "little role" he played in 2021. It sounds like he's really downplaying his middle forward role off the bench. I wouldn't say that role is "little" at all as it's an integral part of the team!

As for only re-signing with us for 2022, maybe that was his wish as the Dolphins are after him, but maybe Manly would only give him one year. Either way, 2022 is either going to make him or break him.

I'll pay that 1 Bozo....my thoughts are he will become a massive asset through the middle in 22....but agree he is a very good centre....I guess Des has his reasons and reckon you will love Dillon Piggy Walker....but you my friend, will be in for a treat soon enough....the name is Koula, otherwise known as "The Flash" 🤙

Still think he’ll be Dolphins bound in 2023
Its not out of the realms of possibility that he is a place holder for Manase. If Walker plays a part in us having another successful season and Nase is found guilty it wouldn't surprise me to see Dylan get an upgraded contract. If Nase is available to play then bon voyage Walker. I see Fainu taking the 14 and splitting time between lock and hooker with Jake and Croker starting in said positions.

An interesting take and probably the n the money !!

Now vaxxed after "doing his own research"

Maori teammate Dylan Walker confirmed he had been vaccinated, but initially held off as he did his own research. Not long after he received the jab, a one-year extension with Manly was rubber-stamped.

“I looked into it and wanted to read about [vaccinations], but I’m vaxxed now,” Walker said. “They [Manly] knew my history, I told them, ‘This is a commitment [I’ve made] for myself’, and nobody is making me do it, but I wanted to do my own research. That was it.

“I still haven’t had COVID yet. I’m one of the few that hasn’t. I’ll keep the head down and train hard.”

Does that mean there will be a Dylan Walker in the PGA similar to Cam Smith? hey Dual Internationals?

Looking forward to seeing how he goes at centre. He's a different body shape, from when he played rep footy at centre and has had a taste of the work rate real footballers churn out🙂 Hopefully we get a chance to see what his turn of speed is like in 2022.
