Young Forwards - Do we have any?

I am not sold on Navale. Agree he looks explosive however it also seems to be short lived. I think he has struggled a bit with the intensity of FG and is being replaced after a short stint. The coaching team see him at training, playing for the reggies and are best to judge. Something is clearly lacking. Similar calls for GCKT. He showed a bit of promise in the trials but has been found wanting in FG. I don't either are the solution to our problems. Unfortunately there are no standout candidates to knock the door down this year. Hugo Hart looks a likely prospect but started the year in SG Ball so may need another 12 months before he can handle FG.

If you look at the juniors we let go during Siebold's tenure Weekes, Fainu x 2 would all strengthen our FG side. We really need to sign 1 or 2 gun young forwards.
You have to give these youngsters at least a full season to see what theyre capable of. The tendency to judge them after a few games then scrap them for an over 30 forward or a regular who has been below average for a long time is what is setting the club back.

Laiafi is another one. I remember some reports early in the year where he looked like a wrecking ball early but there were comments regarding his match fitness and lateral movement. I noted that he played a few games in the NSW Cup but has since moved back to Flegg - off the bench. I would have thought if he was being fast tracked then he would be at least playing NSW Cup regularly to get ready for FG next year. For those that watch him play regularly a) is he the real deal; b) is he off the bench because he is considered an impact player; and c) was he eligible for the NSW U19's?

Tough to say mate honestly, probably is better from the bench but has been starting again lately in Flegg. Seems to just plant his feet which gets caught out easily by the smaller guys with nice footwork. I think in can be fixed but he’ll obviously have to work really hard in the off season. Something that probably gets overlooked as well is the fact he’s still growing into his body as a 18 year old, would have put on a fair bit of muscle which has slowed him laterally until he gets used to it.

Without trying to be harsh some of the other players in that Flegg team are just way off the pace. Constantly defending is always going to make the worst come out of the big guys & that’s all they do some games. I had a look against Tigers a couple weeks ago & we had about 30% of possession. Some cup games at the back end of the year will hopefully be a better indicator of his future.

A.) He’s the real deal but probably developing a little slow which isn’t uncommon for a front rower. I think it just comes down to a big off season.

B.) Definitely will start on the bench for at least a year or 2.

C.) He would have been eligible for NSW but being on such an awful team wouldn’t help selection chances. It would have been good to watch some manly boys there but not a big deal in my opinion, plenty of those guys selected in previous years are now playing Ron Massey Cup & Shield.

Ok. My mate and me are always talking about the footy nearly every second day and for us Neville nobodies, we can see that we have no decent forwards, I think we are all in agreement with that on here. So if we who know nothing can see it, then why cant the powers to be see it,, are they just ignorant or have already given up on this year already and planning on next year, because if we knuckle down then we can still make something of this year, yeah I know, a bit far fetched, We cant keep buying forwards that are in the departure lounge and expect to win the comp, we, us fans have had enough, we are the ones paying for the memberships not them, its like they dont care, anyway thats my rant

I was slightly shocked (and dismayed etc) when I saw Lodge selected for this week, and when I took a look at him in a couple of the training pics ... I was horrified!
My first thought was, he may not play, might be late sub to bring Navale in for example. Although I can't recall Seibs doing late switches before (maybe he has?)
But then I thought, what other conceivable reason could there be to select Lodge, in the shape he is in?
All I could come up with is that, given Paseka and Aloia are gone, Seibold believes we are going to need Lodge at his best if we are to go any where late in the season, so he has to get cracking right away and quickly build.
In other words we definitely have not given up on this year already.

(and nor should we) (yet!!!)

This article has great insight, backed up with stats and data, explaining why we are not performing. We are doing the same thing over and over, and all the other teams have figured us out. We are predictable.

"This is all germane to Anthony Seibold at the Manly Sea Eagles. He’s deep in the third year blues and, if you listen to wise sources, has two games to save his job.

His side have lost to the worst two teams in the NRL, Newcastle and the Gold Coast, back to back, and are drifting listlessly with a 6-8 record through 14 games.

Given the talent available and the expectations, which are never far off sky high on the Northern Beaches, it’s a major underperformance.

With their draw and the challenges elsewhere in the league at different clubs, the top four was a minimum for 2025. Now, they’d be lucky just to make the finals at all".

"Unfortunately for Manly, the left is nowhere near as strong as the right, with Ben Trbojevic a downgrade on Haumole and Brooks not as effective as DCE.

That set sequence tends to end with another slide – Burbo isn’t effective against the grain like Olakau’atu is – and then the tackles have run out.

That brings about the next bit: Manly’s set ends have fallen off a cliff.

As mentioned above, not all tries are line breaks, so a team that has good short kicking will get a higher percentage as they’re finding tries from other sources.

Luke Brooks has 14 line break assists but just seven try assists, while Daly Cherry-Evans is the only one to outperform his break assists with actual tries. Anyone who saw his kicking against the Titans recently can see how this one works".

"So what happened?

Well, they’re on 78 line breaks but only 55 tries.

Melbourne, for example, have 69 from 69 – that doesn’t make them 100%, as not all tries are line breaks (such as those from kicks, for example), but it does show a ruthlessness. Ditto the Dolphins, on 68 from 68.

In fact, it’s normal for teams to be equal, so a 70% conversion like Manly have is bad. In fact, they’re so awful that only the Knights, Eels and Dragons are behind them – aka three of the worst four in terms of tries scored".

Our coach and halves have a lot to answer for.

We should be taking a leaf out of the Roosters and Panthers book identifying young talent
From wherever bring them thru the system from a young age but that of course would require extra funds from owners which ain’t going to happen anytime soon. Instead we keep recycling old plodders rejected by others

We did. The Fainu brothers is one classic example.
We did all the work.

Seibold and Mestrov gave them away to fund our old plodding useless forwards.

The Declining Des mark 2 had to go . No Brainer ! and Mestrov got rid off him

Seibold is no Rebuilding Coach No Brainer and Mestrov not only hired him but also knee jerk extended him .

This extension led to the direction our club was going and rebuilding with aging players
Out with the young and in with the Old was the Manly Mestrov / Seibold Motto

Our recruitment strategy has failed and we need a change of direction. I liked that we signed some young potential stars but we tried to build an engine room on the cheap. Regardless of who your backs are they will struggle behind a beaten pack. IMO Navale and Sykes has earned a shot and should be rewarded for their good form in reserve grade. I would be giving Joey Walsh a shot. I'd actually play Walsh at 7 on his debut and DCE at 9 or 14. Walsh has shown that he can play well amongst men and looks ready. Navale at 13 and Sykes on the Bench and Jake to the front row rotation playing 20 minutes per half. IMO Simpkins is our best number 9 and should be starting.
Agree with this.

C'mon mate,...of course he wants instant success.

"Results driven business", as previously successful Coach Toovey was punted.
Not true in Seibolds case
No Results here but Seibold is still here .

First year we missed the finals
Second year he took basically the same team that made the finals under Des to the finals and no further .
The third year he has us going backwards into a Manly Crisis
