5 Days vs X hours or overs.

Does anyone have a fair answer as to why a test match is played over five days as opposed to either a set number of hours or overs, thus taking weather out of the equasion ?
In this day of professionalism, the players have nothing better to do & the results are so crucial.
Why sould Mother Nature be the most important player in the game ?

They make up time as best as possible, starting early/finishing late. It's just bad luck if a game gets washed out, if it wasn't for bad weather it would probably be 3-1 already.

If you want to take chance out of the game then you would have to get rid of the toss too, that plays a bigger part than weather.

That's the beauty of cricket. Toss wins you certain advantages but weather and other vagaries affect what is going on.

Got to have set days for play for scheduling etc

Though what they should do is make it a rule that all test matches if the light gets bad, lights are put on. When we have the technology their is no point in losing play.

It doesn;t work ads, because a red ball against black sky is impossible to see.

It happened over here vs the poms a few years back, and the poms were filthy in the feild. Astle was hitting high balls and they just stood there with hands covering their heads LOL
