Aloiai Gone

It shouldn’t be used to Rort the system for an older player BUT any player who can no longer get on the field due to injuries incurred because of the game should be able to be paid out and retired and not affect the clubs cap.
Can understand they need to check the medical reports etc even get more opinions, I think insurance companies do all that sort of stuff in the hope of voiding some claims - but with NRL, how long can it take??

Obviously if the process is drawn out it's a major difficulty for the club (Manly!!) because they can't go and offer another player a deal until it's sorted one way or another.

Does anyone have an updated sense of whether its likely the club can "medically retire" Aloiai

It sounds like he has played his last NRL game but he obviously had existing shoulder issues which can cause a denial of a retirement request.

The whole thing is as clear as mud to me, but we need that salary slot filled!
It's 6 weeks since the 'Aloiai to be medically retired' gossip and you'd think by now they'd have done all the tests, MRI's, paperwork and whatever it takes to make this official, but as usual we're in the dark and fed on...nothing. Yes, we could've certainly used his salary slot now but if it ever happens it'll just about be be too little too late.

The same could also apply to what's happening with Croker... we're in the dark and fed on nothing...

Should use it to re-sign Garrick. What the hell is HQ thinking low-balling him?

Im pretty sure Garrick is on a contract north of $750k. We had to fend off Newcastle during the last contract negotiations as they promised him the fullback roll.
In turn we had to offer him fullback money.

He is great for our club and never gives up but for overall cap/squad balance this is probably the right move. I don’t want to lose Koula out of the 2 that’s for sure!

He certainly wouldn’t be getting low balled. It’s the fact a start up team in Perth is going to offer overs, why do you think so many players made sure they are off contract for 2027?
He’s on about $750-$800k I’d hardly call that “ low ball .

Whilst we all love Ruebs , would you ( it’s your choice ) if you were in charge pay him say 1.1 million to play winger ??

He’ll get that to play fullback in Perth.

If so good luck to him but it’ll be “ bye Ruebs “ for me.

IIRC the exact same thing occured with Brad Parker and Woods last year, where they made the decision far earlier in the year, but didn't say anything about it, until Round 27. They then marched around the field.

I imagine they'll announce it for both of them (if not just Aloiai), vs Warriors in Round 27.

Yep frustrating for sure. Makes recruitment discussion (and YARTS) harder 🙂
It’s hard to see Croker ever returning and clearly AoA is gone , so it’s just a matter of if they are going to keep costing us & doing nothing , or we can get rid of them ( nicely ) so they still get their contracts paid.

I hope it’s the latter so they can be replaced.

Totally.
When you think that Paseka has played 3 games, Crokes 4 and Aloiai 5 (including ones they came off hurt in) it certainly hasn't been the good luck with injury that Manly probably always needed this year

If Garrick is on north of $750k, then we have massive problems

This is not the case, he is on <$600k. Daily Telegraph ran through a list of player salaries and he was not above that threshold salary.

There was also a ranking of contract values for all positions, including centres, published, and you could easily figure out who the highest paid centres were across the NRL, and from that, determine that Garrick was not in the top tier of centre salaries.

Is Aloiai gorn yet? Garrick isn't worth the coin he is on in my opinion. No reflection on his effort but we need forwards, the backs have been trying their best to make up for our short comings in the forwards for too long.

According to Zero Tackle our 6 highest paid for '26are,
Turbo - $1.1mill
Jurbo - $1.0
Quac - $0.9
Brooks - $0.7
Fogarty - $0.65
Tent - $0.6
So we are looking good for 2027
Turbo will be $0.7
Jurbo $0.5
Brooks- gone or extends for less
Aloia and Croker medical retirement
We should have the $$ for 3 serious forwards

Agree re Garrick, but I think his salary has been higher than it should be due to him being our only decent kicker. With Fogarty joining us that will no longer be the case

Froggy has just started a Uni degree at Deakin University. Maybe he is moving onor preparing to???

Totally.

This is what I've been saying for a while. Everyone goes on about the injury toll to Souths, yet for the vast majority of the season we've been missing what is essentially our entire first choice front row (Paseka, Croker and Aloiai).
