Were they really THAT good ??
The answer is yes
Firstly a Massive start to this success was the Attitude Ben Kennedy added to Manly (2004-05) ??....it was contagous and the the Attitude and determination to every play was where the success was built from, with the entire squad feeding off his winning attitude like hungry piranhas..
Sure there was my favourite in Snake carving out freakish plays, a young DCE adding zest around the ruck to follow on from a great signing in Matty Orford at halfback, Matai cutting players in half and dashing runs.....cult hero's like Rose and Wolf bringing the crowd into it and the pure class of Lyons with that extra time reserved for the games most gifted....then there was these unsung hero's like Bryant, Mauro, Hall, Galavao and Rodney who worked like Trojans led by the glue of this operation in Matty Ballin.
Kingy and Kite got it done when it counted.
A skillful young Will Hopoate and the most under rated winger in history in GF hat trick legend Robertson.
The last 2 players I mention deserve special praise because in all honesty, I did not realize just how much inspiration they had on this side.
Watmough and Foran....yes plenty of anger on things since this period, but they deserve respect for what they done ON the field during this dominant time.
Foran is simply a Footballer gifted with guts and energy, the ultimate competitor who often rushed up giving away 30kg to put on massive hits to lift the team and basically destroy the opposition momentum. He ran he ball well and always played at the line, sacrificing his body for his team and was always first to pat a mate on the back or give them a rev if they didn't maintain his high level effort in every play.
Watmough was an absolute machine, combining quality with quantity, tackling hard ALL day and like a pinball bouncing out of tackles and always winning the quick play the ball.
This dominant side could easily have won another 2 - 3 premierships with 2013 a rort and off field media crap derailing other campaigns.
A big part of the pain we feel as supporters today, is just how far we have fallen from grace in comparison to this almighty dominant period....hopefully 2019 is the start of a fightback for a new era.

A simple question for the "YARTISTS" amongst us ..... Give us your combined top 17 made up from players 2007-2013 amd 2015-2018 ......

1. Stewart
2. robbo
3. Lyon
4. Matai
5. Wolfman
6. Foran
7. DCE
8. Kite
9. Ballin
10. Tapau
11. Menzies
12. Watmough
13. Stewart

14. Api
15. AFB
16. King
17. Jake T

I'll start of the top of my head

Snake
Robbo
Matai
Lyons
Wolfman
Foran
DCE
Kennedy
Watmough
Gifty
Kite
Ballin
Kapow

Orford
Jake
King
Joe Galuvao

2 from the current squad .... that's not bad ....

Think Beavs would have to take a bench spot and wolfy only beats (2011) hoppa in popularity - hoppa wins in terms of abilty/skill. Other than that - spot on!

Woodsie the b/s yartist!

ah hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha - I thank God I wore my corset, because I think my sides have split. (obscure tv ref anyone...no googling)

I dunno, were they really that good? 6 years.... 6 premierships surely!

edit: they were amazing

Was harder than I thought.

Agree .... I did it quickly and admit I overlooked Menzies ..... WTF ..... but I would take any 3 of Menzies, Watmough, Gifty and Kennedy without arguing ....

I gave the #14 to Orford as I think he would be a better halves sub than APi and a good hooker and leader ..... and AFB over Galuvao isn't silly ... I liked smokin Joe ...

There was a period there when Wolfman was easily the best winger in the game ... at his best he was awesome ...... but you are correct Hoppa would not look out of place ..... I tried to pick players in their positions and whilst I am a big fan of Hoppa I think in each position he played the specialists named just edgd him out ....

If we do this again in 12 months or 2 years I think Tom Turbo will force his way in as well .... but at the moment he still has some improvement to get ......

I would have put Kennedy but he retired before 2007.

Not a fan of the 2014 team @Woodsie ??

Didn't think about it to be honest .... just picked 3 years for the "modern" era for no reason ...... but happy to iclude 2014 .....

The answer to @maxta 's question appears to be answered though ..... with only 2/3 of the current squad getting a start .. that would say that the 2007-13 team was pretty ****ing good ....

I'll start of the top of my head

Snake
Robbo
Matai
Lyons
Wolfman

Woodsie, you missed a trick here. You could have put Tom T on the bench as your backs / edge back row cover!

Good list, by the way. I’d put Tom T on a wing instead of Wolfman, Beaver in for Kennedy, Monaghan on the bench for Orford (more versatility) and Perry on the bench for Joe G. Des for coach of course and Toovey to run the water (I loved seeing Tooves barking orders while carrying the water bottles - he and Alfie revolutionised the water boy role!!) Still not much love for the current crew though...

1) Brett Stewart

Foran a bit of a controversial omission but it's not personal. I love this side

What drove that team to such success was the adversity that most of those guys went through between 2002 and 2005 when our club was on its knees and some very smart investment in young players and shrewd recruitment in players like BK and it built a foundation that was based on hard work, an unbelievable togetherness and will to prove everyone wrong using a siege mentality to create a super team that during the era of 2007 was 2014 was feared by foes and remains one of our most successful eras.

I always thought would Watmough be 1/2 the player he was without the early influence of Ben Kennedy . ..
