Another video ref anomaly

I've never been a fan of the video ref, but I acknowledge they are here to stay. However, I can't understand why they can scrutinise every minute aspect of a try - on side, inside 10 metres, bobble, hand leaving the ball etc etc - yet they are not able to rule on a blatant forward pass. The 'try' the Donkeys scored to get them back into the match with the Cowboys was that blatant that I'd wager the touch judge was a Brisbane fan. But when he 'missed' it surely there is scope for the video ref to step in and rule. It was another embarrassing mess that the NRL has created. What has happened to the rule that says "we'll be a laughing stock unless we correct this wrong decision?". Everybody, except the ref and linesman, knew it was no try, but because of a crazy rule precluding the right to determine a forward pass they have to award it.
It's like a judge in a murder trial having to let a knife-wielding assailant go because he can only rule on gun-related crimes.

Buggered if I know why they can't rule on it. The players are professionals, they played unreal tonight, yet the big talking point is the forward pass. Looks so unprofessional for the game.

Yeah, there's forward and then there's so far forward the defender didn't have to chance to make a tackle because the receiver (the NFL term is apt here) was already past him when he caught the ball. You'd think one of the refs might have noticed it seeing as everybody at the ground did.

They missed a couple forward passes from the Broncos - another one got them a repeat set.

the reason the do not look at forward passes is the rule essentially states that a pass can go forward, as long as it travel backwards out of the hands.

so the GPS trackers would have to be in the hands not the balls

Forward passes CAN be ruled on,

Just not against the favoured teams ( anyone remember the 2013 GF???).

With so many sets of eyes on a game these days it's fecking ridiculous that at least the blatant ones are still let go.

It is what is so infuriating. You get an obvious forward pass like that and it is ignored by the officials, who will then nit pick and penalise a player when another player lays down. I do not understand why forward passes cant be ruled on by the technology. As we learned to our cost in the 13 grand final when a blatant forward pass allowed the Roosters to snatch the lead in that game.

The problem isn't with the ones that go a metre forward, it's the ones that go a little bit forward.....where do you draw the line ? The video ref can't conclusively rule on forward passes because of camera angle, so its an all or nothing scenario. If 4 sets of eyes on the field can't pick up the obvious ones then video ref's hands are tied.

GPS in the ball would work but you'd have to track relative position not absolute.

I'm just suggesting that they don't have restrictions on the video ref when making a decision on try or no try. Let them rule on everything that is involved in making a correct decision. That forward pass was a howler.
I hope the blind touch judge gets sacked and the NRL investigates his recent betting activities.
