Snake is a brilliant player and the difference to me from finishing 4th or 5th and winning a comp.
However, losing him in a game against quality opposition will always screw us. Suddenly Matai on wing....lose his effectiveness, and he got caught positionally for a try, not his fault, I saw Killer play wing one game and he was b***** awful. Just couldn't position himself right. It also put Horo in an unfamiliar situation.
When we line up without him we'll win plenty. (we just might win a couple more with him there).
Buhrer also one time played on the wing, was awful and not fast enough. The Wing Position is a Specialised position, you can't just throw anyone into that, It is a difficult and stressful position on the field and you can't afford to make mistakes, positioning in defence is so important you have to read the game, be focussing on the ball the whole time and be Confident in catching high bombs, quick for grubbers and of course have speed.
Too right, I think most teams have become a little complacent in the modern era that wingers are just another type of forwards who do the first few hitups of a set.
The reality is pretty much what you are saying, but the key is positional play, you can really tell when someone who hasn't played wing gets thrown there (usually due to injury). Against ordinary teams you wont get found out too badly, but come up against a team with a scheming couple of play makers (Smith, Cronk, DCE, Foz) and they'll make you pay.
