Brett Stewart is trying to fast-track his recovery from knee surgery to kick-start the Eagles' dismal season.
MANLY fullback Brett Stewart is racing against the clock to make a miraculous comeback in time to save the Sea Eagles’ season. The Sea Eagles No.1 is peddling three hours a day at the Sydney Sports Academy in Narrabeen to fast-track his return.
Stewart is currently sidelined for up to three months after April 24 surgery on his right knee.
The 24-year-old’s rehabilitation started 48 hours after surgery. The ex-NSW and Australian fullback is now doing everything possible to return to the field to help his mates overcome their terrible start to the premiership defence.
``It’s a daily ritual for him and involves cycling on the stationary bike, along with upper body weights,’’ Stewart’s manager, George Mimis, told The Manly Daily yesterday.
``Fingers-crossed, he’s going to give himself every opportunity to get back as soon as possible.’’
Stewart is scheduled to return to the park somewhere between rounds 16 and 20. The 2008 NRL champions are struggling without their leading custodian, stuck in 14th place with just four premiership points.
But with two byes over the next 10 rounds and winnable home games against Parramatta, the Roosters and Raiders, and an away clash with the Sharks, Manly can reach at least 16 points before Stewart returns.
From there, they would then need to win somewhere between six or seven of the final eight matches to qualify for the top eight.
Manly and City winger David Williams said the team can get back on the winning track without their star player.
``It’s always going to happen. We’ve just got to sort out our own game and get back to the winning performances that we’re used to,’’ he said.
``I don’t think things have come as easy as they did last year, but in saying that the competition’s always changing.
``Teams that didn’t perform so well last year are at the top of the table this year.’’
Manly’s Sunshine Coast contingent of Andrew Suniula and Tony Williams are on stand-by for the Sea Eagles round-nine match with the Broncos at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.
With six players involved in representative games tomorrow night, coach Des Hasler may require the pair.
