Coach Seibold thoughts so far.... so good

I think Seibold is part of the problem, but not in some short sighted ‘he’s won a spoon’ ‘he is accountable’ ‘he’s mediocre’ kind of childish rhetoric.

Rather, he has ability but backed the wrong horse. I see a couple of issues:
1. He has a bit of Brian Smith’s overly-analytical approach to the game. He saw the rule changes/interpretations as an opportunity to leave a mark by pioneering a new approach to the game; one where the ball is shifted out of yardage to speedy edges and risk is encouraged to outscore the opposition in a game where points are inevitable, due to the increased speed and momentum in the game.
2. He is short-term oriented due to his previous sacking at the Broncos. There’s very little happening in our pathways and the two promising rookies we had, were shipped off to another club. Hoppa is the only serious emerging prospect at the club. The signings and/or re-signings of Brooks, Lodge, TKO, Woods, Aloiai, and co. are a sign of where Seibs head is at. Experience to offset the rookie disaster at Brisbane. Basically, why build when you might be sacked before the house is completed.

On the other hand, Ciraldo and Gould went about recruiting lean and mobile athletic types, with a game plan built on high energy defence. Unlike Seibs, they backed the right horse; the horse that has been winning since 1908.

Dogs secret weapon seems to be that they actually enjoy and want to defend. They want to act like a horde of locusts and hurt and harass every ball carrier. And in every carry they want to accelerate into contact. Basically want to win every tackle with and without the ball.

It's apparent that this is a mindset Ciraldo has set as a basic that every player has to agree to buy into, and they have. Pretty basic but effective, in fact it's pretty impressive.

The talents of some individuals are merely cherries on top.

They had a number of forwards missing yet beat a tough Chooks side by wearing them down, there was a sense of inevitability about it even well before half time I thought.

Dog v storm Gf as it looks now.

But who employs the coach?
Mestrov and Penn are accountable for employing a Premiership winning coach
The coach is accountable for his players winning

Nailed it. I would also add a lack of something else that's a little less quantifiable.

Historically, successful NRL head coaches have a quiet confidence in their leadership - they evoke an aura of respect, a little fear, and are great man managers. They keep their messaging simple, with an emphasis on selfless courage. They are themselves fit, stern, and focused, and their players feel the need to earn their coach's respect. A little traditional and patriarchal, but it's a style that stands the test of time when leading young men in a high performance environment. It takes a special combination of qualities to fit this mould. Unfortunately, Seibold does not.

Yeah, but they were coming dead last when Spoon was sacked. The damage was done.

Peter Gentle was brought in to put Tony out of his misery. Like a merry killing.
Not true. After round 15 they were in 15th spot.
But didn't win another game and ended up equal with the Dogs but last on percentages

Actually, Anthony Seibold physically last coached the Broncos in Round 13 of the 2020 NRL Series (65% of the season for 3 Wins & 10 Losses) and Peter Gentle physically coached them from Round 14 up to and including the final round, Round 20 (the remaining 35% of the season) and he didn't win a game in those final 7 games.

When Seibold last coached the team, they were in 15th spot, and they remained there until Round 18. The following week (Round 19) they lost again, and the then last placed Bulldogs beat the Rabbits which then put the Broncos into last place, and the eventual winner of the wooden spoon at the conclusion of the final round the following week.

Seibold officially stepped down on the 26th of August 2020, after he had spent the previous two weeks in home isolation after having to step out of the Project Apollo bubble for a serious family matter.

During those two weeks away, he reflected on his role at the Broncos and the impact it was having on his life away from rugby league.

Broncos CEO Paul White said at the time: “For the remainder of the season, Peter Gentle will continue to coach the team, as he has done for the past fortnight."

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that Seibold was not sacked, he quit.

I agree, and I said pretty much the same things in another thread earlier. There is nothing the Dogs are doing that we couldn’t emulate - all comes back to coaching and attitude. They also recruited smart (focussing on players with the right attitudes). Not rocket surgery.

There has been a suggestion Mestrov and Seibold were mates before Seibold got the gig. If that is true then that would make sacking him tougher. My view is he must see out the season and if DCE is not released before 30 June then the club deserve a significant portion of the blame.

That would be 100% accurate.

It was then revealed that Mestrov was the best man at Seibold’s wedding.

Totally agree with all of this but it’s worth pointing out that mindset is only part of it; the reason it can’t be replicated by other clubs, is because of the aerobic capacity of their squad. You have to assemble a squad of certain ‘types’ of players. Quick, mobile and fit enough to work hard for long periods. We don’t have a forward pack with the same capacity to play high energy for long periods. We could adopt their mindset tomorrow but fall short because we don’t have the same physiology across our squad.

If we are looking for a new coach at some stage, we could do worse than pick from the Ivan Cleary coaching tree which has already yielded Ciraldo and Webster. Have never heard of him, but the current assistant Ben Gardiner might be worth a look.

Fell on his sword.

Barrett did the same.

Neither were wanted by their clubs and the writing was on the wall.

Someone said Mestrov was best man at Seibold's wedding. That is absolutely BS. I think Mestrov addressed it at some point, and so did the DT, both confirming it was false.

Many people compare us to Gould and Ciraldo at the Bulldogs, but there are several key differences:

Gould arrived in the 2021 pre-season, whereas Mestrov arrived in the 2023 pre-season. In terms of implementing junior changes, Mestrov should be about two years behind, and that tracks. Our biggest reserves change occured just this year, with NSW Cup becoming in-house. The junior nursery that Gould championed began functioning from 2021 onwards. The recruited and developed juniors in Laiafi, Muagututia, Walsh, the Larges, etc, are all a year or two away still, which also tracks. Keep in mind we are demographically far worse than CB.

Secondly, there were no Trbojevics and DCE when Gould arrived. He had full roster control. We already know that the NRL said no to Turbo wanting a pay cut, so the only option here would've been releasing the three of them. That would've been the stupidest decision in the club's history. They are overpaid, sure, but no players of their calibre would be coming to Manly to replace them, if that's how they know they will be treated.

Additionally, Seibold did far better in that first season than Ciraldo did, and with a club basically melting down in the background. Gould had full control by the time Ciraldo came in. Mestrov was still dispatching the Fulton's and flogging off Tartak in 2023.

Finally, we had a battle of these exact two teams in a finals game... We won. We were also the first team to towel them last year.

I thought we looked on the same level as the Bulldogs at the start of this year. Then DCE... The players will not perform under a captain who doesn't want to be here. The players also won't perform for a team that culls their club-legend captain early. It's a lose-lose situation here.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. And, we are so far behind the Dogs it is ridiculous to imply we are close to their level. The big difference between Siebold and Ciraldo is we have no consistency and they are improving big time year on year. I thought we got a little lucky in the finals game against them last year. Since then they have improved without a doubt while we have gone the other way.

The Dogs have shown toughness in spades while we have shown ourselves to be good when possession falls our way. The Penrith win was easily our best. We have not displayed the Dogs win at all costs, never beaten performance at any time this year. To suggest otherwise is just wishful thinking.
