MANLY are set to announce the re-signing of back-rower Curtis Sironen on a three-year $1.25 million deal.
The contract extension comes amid the club’s salary cap issues and will keep Sironen at the Sea Eagles until the end of 2021.
The former Wests Tigers forward played 16 games in his first season at Manly in 2016, scoring six tries.
Sironen started in every game last year before a pectoral tear in June forced him to undergo surgery. He did not return until Round 26.
Manly officials, including coach Trent Barrett, were highly impressed with the rising forward’s form and resolve to return during his time on the sidelines and it’s a major reason why they want to retain him.
Sironen also rediscovered his love for the game during his maiden year at Manly.
This wasn’t the case in his final season at the Tigers in 2016, when he was either injured or in reserve grade.
At the time of signing a two-year deal with the Sea Eagles in ‘16, he made his career intentions clear.
“I want to be playing first grade. When I spoke to Trent (Barrett) for the first time, he won me over straight away with his enthusiasm,’’ Sironen said. “This is a good fresh start for me.
“There is a great core of young players here at Manly, a number of internationals, as well as an experienced mix of forwards.
“I want to show what I can do. I want to reach my potential and I’m sure I can do that here at Manly.”
This is exactly what Sironen achieved at the Sea Eagles last season.
The son of Balmain legend Paul Sironen rediscovered his finest form and is now considered one of the most improved players in the NRL competition.
The 24-year-old will form a strong back-row partnership with former Dragon Joel Thompson at Manly this season.
Sironen’s signature in the midst of the club’s third party issues is proof new CEO Lyall Gorman is trying to push forward and build a competitive roster.
The Sea Eagles have 12 players off-contract this season, including Lewis Brown, Brian Kelly and Aku Uate.
Gorman has also confirmed the Sea Eagles remain hopeful of signing Trent Hodkinson to partner Daly Cherry-Evans in the halves this season.
Hodkinson’s mooted move to Brookvale hit a roadblock prior to Christmas due to the club’s cap issues.
It’s understood Manly are ready to offer the former NSW Origin half a contract, but they won’t be given the green light until the NRL is satisfied that their cap dramas have been resolved.
The Sea Eagles were granted an extension to their breach notice issued on December 11 and have until the end of January to file their submission.
Until then, the NRL is unable to complete its investigation it is unlikely any new contracts will be registered.
Despite this, Manly are confident of signing Hodkinson and retaining other contracted players in the coming weeks.
