Dumb Tom tactics

It’s simple to me , our mostly lazy forwards need to harden the **** up and create some space for the backs.

That’s when you’ll see Tom shine.

Whilst we are on players effectiveness DCE made 25 tackles. 4th on our tackling list. Really puts some of our forwards to shame.

Quite a few were 1 on 1 against larger forwards.

I just don’t know why our forwards don’t protect him like other teams protect their halfback keeping them fresh for attacking raids.

Over the years many teams have done this to us, then we all complain that we have no attack.

Souths set up from a penalty and run a play and score a try, Manly passes it to the halfback to take a hit-up straight into a set defence!
On the credit side, there is so much to work on at least the players won't get bored this year.

Tom’s hit ups are so good though, I think manly should use him as a battering ram, then have Dce do heaps of 360s on the next play to give Tom time to dust himself off, then Dce can pass it to Tom out the back for a sweep play.

It appeared that the Bulldogs "Tom tactics" were just to tackle him before he got the ball. Must have happened at least 3 times. I guess that's one way to stop him.

I think it's time to build a team for Turbo and start looking at moving DCE on. Manly need to get the right players so Turbo can benefit instead of this here you go Turbo attitude the current team have.

Our attack in general is bog average unless it’s ad lib with Tom scorching oppositions on talent alone or Foran playing direct.

When you watch Souths, Penrith, Storm, it always looks like they know what they’re trying to do. We look like we’re making up on the spot most of the time.

Problem in the last 2 games was when we had the ball for long periods on attack and ended up with no points .We need to put on points when we get into the red zone or we end up getting frustrated and that's where errors come in .

DCE to Hooker, Foran to half and Schuster to 5/8 as advocated by others on here is looking like a real good idea.

Thats called the spin to win tactic. Give dce some poker machine training and he'll be ready for the raiders.

Turbo may be a bit frustrated that he hasn't been able to assert himself this season (yet). Several times, he's been stopped on the try line from scoring. Last year, he regularly crashed through multiple defenders on the line. Also, he bombed a try early in the game against the Dogs by trying to crash over himself, rather than passing to Garrick on the outside.

We need another danger man to take the pressure off Turbo - maybe a stepper like Weekes or a speed merchant like Koula. Hopefully, Schuster will bring more x-factor to our attack when he returns.

As I and other posters have suggested, the best ploy for success in 2022 would be with a Schuster - Foran - DCE triumvirate. DCE has many skills plus stamina. Surely, he could transform himself into an effective and dangerous no. 9?

Unfortunately, he looked like a middle forward by the end of play: battered and bruised from heavy contact.

Tom won't last until the finals if he keeps taking so many tough hit-ups.

Completely agree. I just wish it was the only dumb thing that team did on Sunday? I find it hard to believe DES said get out there and off load, throw it around and play dry weather footy in that down poor. Dumb, I'll disciplined, delusional, they sure like making it hard for themselves.

Your right it won't happen.

Which is strange, considering DES is the coach, who better than DES, a former Kangaroo halfback just like chez, Manly Premiership no 7 early on (just like chez) in 87, DES started at hooker in the 95 grand final, came off the bench to taste premiership glory in 96. Just a great no 13 for many a year, to accommodate Toovs and Lyons.

If anyone should know that sometimes great mature aged half backs value to the team doesn't just leave, it just changes positions slightly. It should our man in charge.

Agree. Mostly (not always), the team's best players should start the game. Walker is one of our classiest backs, but Des selects him as a forward on the bench. I doubt Croker is one of our thirteen best players and as he is not a specialist hooker, I don't know why he is in the starting side (apart from his defence). I think it would strengthen the side playing Schuster at 6 with DCE at 9. Foran is a better organizer than DCE & can guide the team as 7. He is also probably a better captain as he leads from example when the going get tough.

I reckon there is a zero % chance of this happening...not saying it’s completely crazy but Daly’s kicking game out of yardage will keep him at half. I doubt he would agree to it anyway and he’d be on the first flight out to Redcliffe lol
