Bennett never got it wrong with Ballin. He just had too many hookers in front of him at the Broncos like Berrigan and a guy called Michael Ennis.

Ballin was a very good hooker but hardly a world beater - but boy could he tackle and get good quick passes out to his halves.

Matty Ballin was not a world beater. However he never gave ness than 100% percent. Very rarely injured & one of Manly's finest... Along with Wolfman the most underrated & best Manly players.

From memory ballin was a lock in juniors, didn’t really play hooker until Des. Bennett didn’t see him as anything more than a tough tackling reserve grade lock.

I agree but wouldn't that mean that Gus would have to admit Trent was the wrong choice of coach which would be a blow to his massive ego.

I've gotta believe he did the same with the Dogs as he did with us and recommended Trent as the perfect coach.
