Fitness - Whats the verdict ?

maxta

First Grader
A fair way into the season and the energy levels seem to drop every game after 15 - 20 minutes.
The kick chase, players getting back on side, line speed ect.
Also wondering if these negative kicks to the sideline are a fitness factor also, as have never seen a Manly team in 40 years employ a tactic designed to slow the game down like this, unless wearing down the clock or when the side had dominant defence and made opposition pound it out from their 10m line and belt them into submission, certainly not a tactic that will benefit this team.
Manly are averaging 20 points a game and are closer to being an effective attacking unit than defensive unit, so any opportunity from 10-20 metres out would think its time to put in an attacking kick or even run the thing.
The old rule of doing what the opposition does not want, is not on show here....must feel good to have Manly bash 70 metres up field and then find the side line when they are trailing or even on the scoreboard??
Could it be designed due to a fatigue factor....surely not - right?
Seen the NRL Pre season insight and must add, the West Tigers training camp was tough and almost torture sessions....the start to their season for mine was no fluke and though have come back to the field as Most sides increase fitness, I have no doubt the off field advantage of Top line training, diet and discipline are a Massive advantage teams can have.....to the point the team with less talent, can certainly upset more fancied opponents on the back of this, especially early season.

We are the Gold coast from about 4 years ago

They haven't looked fit for the past 3 seasons No line speed and absolutely manhandled by the dragons park for the past couple of years who look much bigger fitter and stronger than our pack

We have been dominated physically by most other teams for a long time now and struggle to put players down on the ground Even the tigers looked much fitter than us this year

Unfortunately another 2 and 1/2 years of the same crap to look forward to

Yeah ,,, nah .... It is a matter of seeing what you are looking for .... as soon as someone suggests we are unfit you can see signs everywhere.

Any team that has to defend for 2/3 sets in a row looks puffed ......

Check how hard a sprinter is blowing after only 10 seconds and 1 run of 100m ......

It is not blowing hard that is an indication of fitness .... it is the length of recovery time ....

We are as fit as any team.

I have never been a fan of Ferris - I believe if you are going to employ someone from outside of your system, get someone who has come from a stronger (or at least as strong) program/team/set-up than your own. Instead we brought in Ferris from the struggling, underwhelming Titans along with their former head coach (who also under performed) - yes Cartwright was assistant at the Cowboys who won the comp (however, I doubt much of that was due to him).

The kicking for the sideline is probably a combination of things; namely, I believe it is an acknowledgment of our weaknesses in defence. We are trying to take the wingers and fullback out of the game, i.e. prevent them from returning the ball against a defensively line that is not set. This shows that Barrett knows our defence is crap, particularly on the edges and he doesn't trust us to be able to contain the opposition. This is such a negative mind set and it shows in our results.

We should be playing attacking football at every opportunity - looking for repeat sets, putting pressure on the opposition and attacking with our defence. All our training sessions from this point forward should be to set us up for next year - it should be about repeat sets, quick play the balls and defence. Communicating in defence, moving up quickly in defence as a single organism and intimidating the opposition. That's it. Fitness plays a massive role in this type of play and in my view we are not fit enough to play this way (we aren't sluggards, we are probably middle of the pack - but it only takes 5% improvement to see major results when teams are so close in training methods and fitness levels). The pre season next year should be targeting the necessary improvements to facilitate this type of play. Yes, I am being overly simplistic and it is easier said than done; however, this is the style of play that Manly has thrived on in the past and are always successful with.

PSS ... also remember that true fitness takes years to develop ..... a rookie reserve grader, no matter how good his preseason, will struggle to match the fitness of a 5 year first grade veteran ...... and we have our share of rookies ...

I agree to a degree. I don't believe we are as fit as any team. In individual sport, team sport etc, you will always find different levels of fitness - you hear ex players come out and say they didn't put in at training as much as they could have (I've heard this more than once) - that player X was a beast as they did extras all the time etc etc. There isn't a great deal between teams; however, you need to find that extra 5% that will put you ahead of the pack and let you do things others can't.

I played basketball for years - the fitter I was, the better I played. I played in teams where team mates were clearly cutting corners in training, I've played on teams where the training programs were significantly harder than others (in the same grade) and it showed in performance - majorly. You would know Woodsie - it allows you to do the little extras that can get you the win, or turn the tide of a game, or build momentum. A little bit more can go a long way, and this is something we did so well in years past.

we beat Canberra last year by kicking into touch removing their kick returns from the game with great effect.

So you are a fan of these kicks into touch when behind on the scoreboard in attacking positions ??.....well it is a forum based on opinion after all.....

I’m very fit for my age. I am in an occupation where maintaining personal fitness is actively encouraged and therefore I ‘make it so’.

Thanks for asking.😉

Let's look at some facts:

X Ferris has been a head fitness coach for two teams. In that time, his team's have won 0 finals. That's right, 0 in 7 years.

X I have personally spoken to someone at the club (and I did impart the comments directly to Lyall Gorman) that Dan Ferris has bullied certain members of staff, and that he is part of the segregation culture within the group. Fact.

X Opinion only here. Not one of our players look fitter than they did the year before. Take injuries out of this, because Ferris can't control broken feet, ACL's, and all that. What he can control is our players looking spent after 10 minutes. Commentators are constantly calling us lethargic, lazy, slow. Our play the balls are Titanic like.

Fact again: Matt Ballin on Fox tonight suggested he wanted to, and hoped to be part of OUR club again one day. This is our opportunity to get a fitness guy, that:
1. Loves Manly, and has Manly blood;
2. Is a fitness mentor already;
3. Learned under Singe, and QLD Origin coaches;
4. Is a proven winner;
5. Was well known as a mediator, not a trouble maker or bully.

Ferris perceives as sloppy, and in my opinion, has added 0 value to our club, and is an unsuccessful Cartwright ring in.

Now's the time to rid ourselves of this bum. There has to be some accountability for seasons 1 and 3 under Barrett. We've equalled the club's worst ever losing streak in 2016.

If Gorman has ANY credibility, he needs to set a standard. Keeping this bully, and gronk around, is a death sentence to.our club. I've told Lyall who imparted information about him to me.

Sack Ferris.

Love to have Matt back here at the club some day, absolute legend of our club, mate. Dan won’t be going anywhere anytime soon though.
