Social media abuse allegations sour Knights NRL victory over Manly​

The Newcastle Knights rugby league club has referred threatening social media messages sent to one of their players to the NRL's Integrity Unit.

Several Knights players shared screenshots of the messages, allegedly sent to winger James Schiller, during Thursday night's extra-time victory over the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at Hunter Stadium.

The messages, graphic in nature, included one that said "count your days.....I will f***ing end your life".

Newcastle Knights coach Adam O'Brien said the club was providing direct support to Schiller.

"That's worrying … for him to go through that over a couple of errors [in the game] … he's got a family," O'Brien said.

I always feel that if they catch the 'typist' it's either....

• Wasn't me, I wuz haaaaaacked!!!!
• It was just a joke....
• It was just an outburst. I have drug/abuse/poor childhood/ stubbed toe issues as well.

Never any really owning up, and no more than a slap on the wrist, if any.

I could be wrong though. If so my account was hacked.

Definitely should be prosecuted, death threats are not trivial matters.
But also to me just highlights the sense of entitlement some fans develop.
As though if their footy club doesn't live up to the level they believe they are entitled to (because if their team is losing then their entire self-esteem has been insulted and crushed??) so they are then entitled to abuse insult and in this case even threaten the life of someone.

I agree. It is indeed a difficult burden having to continually ascend to the rarified air of the high moral ground and I applaud your steadfast dedication to the task. Personally, I find it immensely frustrating being so enlightened and having to constantly deal with low self-esteemers who prefer a winning football team to a losing one. Some may say it’s drawing a long bow to equate venting and death threats, but not me. Some may also say constant virtue signalling often reflects more on the signaller than anyone else, but again, not me.

To be on the safe side, as venting and death threats clearly occupy the same “sliding scale”, I propose that we henceforth ban all criticisms after a loss, and should instead be encouraged to post motivational words of empathy and affirmation, encased in flower beds and love hearts. If that doesn’t guarantee a win, at least I will feel less lonely on the high moral ground of self awareness.

There are many things that are not acceptable
Death threats are not acceptable
Inept teams capitulations that embarrass the clubs great ethos and Jersey is not acceptable
Just like it is not acceptable for us to get paid and blin in our jobs and let our organisation and its clients down
All passionate supporters have a right to express their views
with their cheers and their boos .
