It’s not footy related, but thought I’d share my evening anyway, it began sitting out the back watching the last of the day with the family, the fog was starting to roll in, when we witnessed a massive wedge tail take down a mid size adult roo, David Edinburgh move over, they are one powerful bird, it spooked a mob of about 12, before diving in and clutching onto the back of the neck of the poor old roo in full flight, sent them both crashing to the ground, bird didn’t let go, it’s legs were almost as big as Frank stokes, it bit into the back of the neck and pretty much killed the poor old roo instantly, maybe severed its spinal cord, unbelievable to see something like that, he then proceeded to eat almost the entire animal in just under an hour, he flew off with a portion, you could see a leg hanging from his talons, we went down and looked at what was left of the carcass after he flew off, not much, bloody amazing to see how much it devoured. I’ll throw up a photo of what he left.
A wedgy that size could take down an 8 to 10 year old no problems, that’s a scary thought, but after watching what we saw, I have no doubt whatsoever. Hard to say just how big he was, but at a guess he would have had a wing span around 3 metres. Watching him stand over his kill, I’d say he also stood about 3 feet tall. It knew we were watching, you could tell it actually made him nervous, you could see him ripping the roo apart one bite at a time, turning to watch us while he ate each bite.
After coming back from looking at his kill, we went in to warm up by the fire, cooked up some Jaffles, a layer of bitey cheese, a big scoop of spaghetti, pickled capsicums, a sprinkle of Mozzarella, two layers of roast beef and another layer of bitey cheese, into the fire and bang, I’ll show you below.
Anyway thought I’d share my evening, as that was one of those special moments your unlikely to ever see. I’ve seen them feeding on kills before, but never seen a take down and the kill, they are one powerful bird, with a hell of an appetite.
