Sunday NRL treat gives fans hope for season ahead

Well, this was a real Sunday afternoon rugby league treat. Allowing for the fact it's only round one and all teams are open to improvement, Manly and Parramatta provided fans with a bruising encounter, highlighted by powerful forward charges and crunching big hits in defence.

In the end, it was a 20-12 victory for the Eels. More importantly, both teams gave their fans a real sense of hope for the season ahead.

The opening gambit from both teams was brutal. The two forward packs really tore into each other. To be honest, they continued this battle all the way until the final siren.

The Eels dominated possession and field position in the first half, not so much by their own great ball control, but more because the Sea Eagles went through a 15 minutes period of "dropsies" where they just couldn't seem to hold onto the ball.

Time after time we saw Manly invite Parramatta down to their own end of the field with their own unforced errors. The result was that by half-time Parramatta had played the ball inside the Manly 20m zone on 22 occasions. By comparison, Manly only had four tackles inside the Parramatta 20m zone.

The second half was pretty much more of the same. With Parramatta half back orchestrating and controlling the play, the Eels again set up camp at the Manly end of the field. Whilst the Parramatta attacking game wasn't brilliant, Norman executed the fifth tackle options so well they forced seven line drop out restarts and kept the pressure on the Manly side for what seemed an eternity. The final statistics will show that Parramatta had 43 play-the-balls inside the Manly 20m zone. Manly could only manage 12 opportunities at the other end of the field.

Over the course of the 80 minutes, Parramatta had more than 60 per cent of total possession and completed 31 sets of six with the ball compared to a paltry 21 sets of six for their opponents.

Whilst this flow of possession was obviously not ideal for the home side, I believe this is where we witnessed the biggest improvement in Manly's game compared to last season. They defended their line stoutly and showed real resilience when under attack.

Individual Manly players racked up some huge tackle counts. API Koroisau 41, Martin Taylah 34, Curtis Sironen 31 and Jake Trbojevic 49 led the way. On those numbers, Parramatta were probably entitled to win a far greater margin.

Of course, all this defensive work for the Manly boys meant they had little energy left for attacking football. They were in survival mode for most of the contest and constant fatigue took its toll.

For Parramatta, I was mightily impressed with their intent. This is a strong, committed and physical football team that constantly looks to make life difficult for opposition players. When you play Parramatta you will have to earn every metre and earn every tackle. They give nothing away.

Parramatta's attack? Well, basically it starts and ends with Corey Norman. He is a real class act. He missed the back half of last season and didn't get to trial before this match, but this didn't stop him producing a masterful performance. His combination in the halves with young Clint Gutherson will only improve with time.

Manly fans also have cause for optimism. You can cheer for this team. They have heart.

It was a wonderful Sunday afternoon of entertainment.

Thank you gentlemen, I enjoyed the game.

What I get from that...is poor ball control gave an inferior team key field position ...which is true.
Another thing is to put more heat on the opposition playmaker,.....don't give 23 seconds to make decisions...up in the face and hit them hard ....put them on their ass....make them think twice or more about the next time the ball is at hand.

Was it just me or did we comprehensively win those forward exchanges? The only hit I can remember from the Eels was Takairangi on Kelly and was nothing special...

Otherwise I saw our forwards constantly dump the Eels pack on their arse and I saw Taupau fold a couple of players like my laundry. Going on and on about the Eels physicality has got me beat because I thought we were far more physical?

Dafuq is Martin Taylah?

#spellingpolice

Edit: beaten like a red headed stepson lol

Their line speed was exceptional (though suspect), and they controlled us pretty well around the ruck. We put on better hits, but we let them run at us, so they made better ground.

Yup we definately won the forward battle, it all came down to ball-security but that will improve with game time

That was also due to the heavy defencive load we'd put on ourselves. As long as we can hold them out for nine straight sets on the line I'm happy. As mentioned I think we just beat ourselves with handling

We were defensively more physical but parra do run hard at you relentlessly all game. Thought we handled them very well. Shut down norman and you can go a long way to nullify their attack. Teams will work that out this year. We had that problem last with dce.

If we controlled possession and had better field position we would of put more points on.

Still some good positives

Nothing suspect about it. 95% of the time Atkins wasn't back the 10 and most of the time doesn't-matta's defensive line was in front of him, yet I think he only called them offside once in the entire 80 minutes.

Even Bill Harrigan was blowing up about it on radio and when Bill is saying Manly were getting a raw deal you know the referee had a bad day because he has no love for the maroon and white.

Its far easier for defenses to rush the attack when they only have 6 or 7 metres to move than when they have to move the full 10.

I think if teams can shut Norman down then they will go a long way to shutting doesn't-matta down, just like us last year when we only had DCE to do the play making.

Let's not forget that Parra scored a try off an arsey kick and regather, another off an arsey 40-20, and another straight after a penalty that was a clear refereeing error.

Let's also not forget that 3 of our "dropped balls" were heavily helped out by Beau Scott and borderline strips.

I don't think I've ever seen us so badly screwed over by terrible luck before.

I also think we need Lussick back, and while he's at it he can bring his brother with him because Koriosau is not a hooker's a-hole.

Reading on social media, non Manly fans saying this Ref was out of his depth. They were haunted about him reffing their teams.

I haven't been able to see a full replay of it, but there is a rumour doing the rounds on social media that the 40/20 came on the 7th tackle.

Can anyone confirm or kill this rumour?
