The Turnbull government is considering a major crackdown on gambling ads during TV sporting events as it seeks to strike a deal with the Senate crossbench to water down Australia's media ownership laws.

Nick Xenophon, whose votes will be crucial for media ownership reform to pass the Parliament, is using a ban on betting ads during sporting broadcasts as a bargaining chip in his negotiations with the government.

Even betting operators such as Tabcorp and commercial TV bosses have admitted to concerns about the surge in gambling advertising over recent years. More than one in every six ads broadcast during AFL matches last year were for gambling companies.

This already happens during GEM's broadcasts in South Australia. The part where they go to Joel Cain and SportsBet during the pre-game is always blanked out due to South Australian Government legislation.
So Joel is a quasi-household name in SA, without anyone knowing what he looks like?

Or being able to experience the joys of his 110 kph verbal delivery.

These ads just get shoved down our throats constantly during sporting events yet the players who get the biggest penalties from the powers that be are not the wife beaters but the ones who had a bet. And why is this?
Because them having a bet may make it unfair for other gamblers on whom the sponsors and therefore the sport rely.

Its the last game of the round, your last chance to blow your money. So jump in the car and run down to cash converters and hock the tele. Rabbits are paying 1.85 and remember with our cashback special if your team leads by six but goes on to lose, you get your tv back.

Heck, why not throw on a same game multi, just give us your house keys, those kids dont need a roof. Back Greg Inglis in to score with a bunnies win and double that profit.

But always remember, Gamble responsibly.

the adds are bad enough but most of the commentators (and I use the word loosely), harp on about betting odds too .... that is talking irresponsibly about gambling (in front of young impressionable kids), any wonder this country has such a gambling problem ..

Very nice, we are moving to SA at the end of the year. That will be a nice little extra

Such hypocrites!!!

I am all for this. The gambling ads are a blight on the game. I switch them off cause they get repeated and repeated and they appeal to the boof headed footy fan. Not all of us gamble on football and with some of the recent problems in the game regarding gambling it is appropriate that the government do this as they did with cigarette and alcohol advertising in the past.

Does that mean they won't be able to show the sign for 'Lottoland' during the game? Now that would be a shame. Although then do we lose another major sponsor again. Yep here we go again
