Brett can't be re-tried for the same offence, he's been acquitted, that is a very basic principle of our criminal system.

There is a provision for a fresh trial in certain circumstances but limited to offences more serious than what Brett was charged with.

This case is finished.

(Also, on all the proposals to recover costs etc, zero chance based on everything I've seen reported. He can sell his story, that's about it.)

And I understand defamation is on the basis of balance of probabilities rather than beyond reasonable doubt.  So a successful defence in a criminal case (beyond reasonable doubt) on a matter of law does not automatically translate into a related civil matter (balance of probabilities). So harder to win or defend a civil matter than to defend a criminal one - a greater onus of proof. With the time, financial and emotional investment involved, Brett might not think pursuing damages is worth it given the inherent unpredictability of court decisions.
