Is this where we are headed ( NRL)

Considering the reason the game is expanding is so there are more games for TV there is next to no chance teams will be run out of the comp regardless of their results (as it is now almost impossible to go broke due to the funding)

As for on the field I think there is a difference between sustained success and winning a comp

I’ve been banging on about how the rich clubs are doing well and we ( not a rich club ) are just one of the middling clubs , and will continue to be the same under the current ownership structure.

My point in case.

The English Super League

12 sides currently ( I think a couple folded ) but let’s just use the 12.

Out of the 12 here are the winners from the last 25 years.

St Helen’s 8
Bradford 3
Leeds 8
Wigan 6

Just 4 clubs , the other 8 , not a sniff!!

Money is EVERYTHING over there , the best facilities , the best players , the best coaches & footy departments.

I fear we are headed in exactly the same way.

Thoughts ???
I reckon Money is everything on this side of the hemisphere too.

Time to win this thing

I'd like us to go for guys who can't quit crack First Grade behind a stacked roster, and upcoming players, rather than blow it all on a marquee player
Yes I think that’s a smart approach , it’s a bit like Jamie Humphrey’s or Kaeo Weekes , both left for first grade starts as they couldn’t get that with us.

There’s bound to be players waiting for a chance

The chickens and storm chasers never have to shed players. The fact Penrith have lost so many makes their success even more incredible. I can't see anyone getting close to what they have achieved.
They're both owned by billionaires with an interest in rugby league, not to mention the Storm is one of two (previously?) majority News Corp owned teams - they're going to run a tight ship, that's a given.

These are the things that get deals over the line now, it's all corporate connections and benefits. Why would I sign a contract with Manly for $4-500k more over a career than with the Roosters, when I know sure as **** the Roosters are going to give me access to all the commercial resources, investments and other things that make the extra $500k a tax headache in the end, not an incentive?

We're based in one of the most desirable geographical locations in the world. We do have a filthy rich, business savvy owner. The problem is he lives in New York and doesn't really seem to give a **** about rugby league, outside owning a team for whatever egotistical reasons he has.

Agree with all of this except the part about our owner being filthy rich. I believe the Penn family would be at the very bottom of the sports team ownership food chain in terms of actual worth. They are paupers swimming in a pool of kings. There's an egotistical reason right there.

So

AoA -medical retirement $650k
Sipley-UK $400k
GCKT- UK $200k

All rumoured

Croker - possible retirement $500k

Jazz-UK $400k
DCE- Rorters $850k

Potentially 3 million there , only incoming is Fogarty , I think he was $650k

Could be up to 2.4 million
Bit of inflation on these numbers, compared to what is likely is:

Aloiai: more like $500k
Sipley: $300k
GCKT: $120k
Croker: $300k
Jazz: $120k (said he was on min. wage)
DCE -> Fogarty, $200k saving (900->700)

Remembering that Muagututia will replace GCKT's contract, and Laiafi will replace Jazz's. Also, Simpkin's contract value goes up in 2026, basically swallowing Croker's cash. This leaves about ~1 million for 2026 to play with. Mind you, this must be used on 2-3 players, so about $300-$500k per player. So one or two decent first graders.

They did buy in cheaply , and now getting a decent return on investment ( I think ) with the NRL covering all the big expenses.

They are wealthy , but certainly not uber rich.

I think the being overseas and not really involved is probably the biggest thing.

I was really guessing , it’s a pity they don’t publish the numbers.

I don't think Penn is as rich as what people think, certainly not in the billionaire class, very likely not even 250 million, sure he owns the club, but i very much doubt that he would be prepared to throw in an additional 6 or 7 million year in year out without affecting his bottom line.
