Might not mean premiership window but I recall a few NRL pundits picked Manly to be a Top 4 side this year (like yourself I wasn't so confident). I went back to check my memory and found the following story amongst all the betting search results...interesting read I thought.

As per much of the last half-decade, Manly’s season swings on the health of Tom Trbojevic. Arguably the most damaging player in the game when fully fit, the star Manly custodian has missed at least half of the season in four of the last six years. The coach, Anthony Seibold, floated shifting him to the centres but fortunately for Manly such silliness went nowhere. Trbojevic headlines arguably the most potent backline in the NRL, particularly with the emergence of the young star Lehi Hopoate. It is the pack that is more concerning but the signings of Jazz Tevaga and Sio Siua Taukeiaho added some much-needed gumption. Manly beat both Melbourne and Penrith last year so have the upside to go a long way in 2025.

There is a reason Jake was dropped from origin.
He brings very little. As a mentor it hasn't worked. The club should pay a professional mentor to get them up for the season, not Jake.
This leaves us with what he brings, no meters , penalties , missed tackles. So why is he in there, oh he bleeds manly. Well there are so many that bleed manly but can't play.

Hard decisions need to be made, and somebody needs to make them. But as @Frogz says, Penn has had his head stuck in the sand (or elsewhere) since his Uncle Zorba dragged him into the club. The Penns got lucky when they bought into the team, and it seems like they took it for granted that success would keep coming. It hasn't.

As @themanwithnoname says, we have to stop pretending we're still a premiership force and acknowledge that we need to blow it all up and start again. Maybe losing our "marquee" halfback will help trigger that realisation. Or maybe we're in for another decade of more of the same.

Realistically what can we do with Jake? Anything less than a playing contract would be somewhat offensive if he wants to play on.

He's not a modern lock, doesn't make enough meters to play prop and doesn't have the impact to come off the bench - I really just don't see anywhere he can add value to the team.

He's still on about a million for next year so it'll be interesting to see what happens, hopefully it doesn't end in tears. The Trbojevic's care about Manly and would put the club first, but I don't see Jake walking away from that kind of money.

Jake isn't what he was but can we get an acknowledgement here that he is obviously being coached to be a link man primarily in attack.

Below shows Jake is our third primary passer whilst the ranks 14th for one pass runs (hit ups) and 16th for total runs.

If you watch closely he often runs when we are looking to get to a mark on the field with a quick play the ball so we can set up a set play.

this is not to absolve him but for mine its outrageously simplistic to say 'he made 30m he is crap' when he is obviously playing a role set out for him.

He's rubbish he can tackle and give away penalties and 6 agains, but outside of that absolute dribbler. I don't buy the nice guy thing, his times come and gone.

There is no doubt in my mind that the coach got that decision absolutely wrong and I've been calling for Jake to go into the front row rotation all season. Jazz should have been our 13.

The disrespect shown to Jake is astounding. Sure, comment on his form (which is objectively nowhere near what it used to be, probably because of all the years he put the team on his back and carried them forward), but the abuse and derision towards him by some on here is so petulant. A “dribbler” as someone above called him? FMD

We wonder why players don’t feel a sense of loyalty and love for their clubs these days. Maybe because the support from the club and fans is seemingly conditional.

Jake is a legend of our club. Always will be. When the time comes, I’m sure he will do the right thing by the club.

In saying that, it may be better to take the hit in 2026 and offer him 200k in 2027 as a final year. If only all our players had this commitment and heart. When they brought in the 6 again rule (dumbest thing the game has done probably ever) it totally nullified Jakes game.

His strength is his defence in the middle but the lack of go forward makes him a liability out there now.
