The court heard that the son of rugby league bad boy John Hopoate was suffering from long-term drug, alcohol and gambling addictions and was paid $10000 for his role in retrieving part of the drug shipment.
He was arrested after police intercepted a consignment of drugs arriving at Sydney airport from London in May 2021.
Police switched out the drugs for a dummy substance and installed surveillance devices .
He was arrested after he climbed inside a truck linked to the massive 514kg cocaine haul - estimated by police to have a street value of $154m - at Port Botany before leading police on a brief chase.

Hopoate pleaded guilty to one count of supplying a large commercial quantity of a prohibited drug.
The court heard that he retrieved eight 1kg blocks of the fake substance before jumping in a silver Hyundai van being driven by Leanne Mafoa.
Mafoa also pleaded guilty to a charge of accessory after the fact to supplying a prohibited drug.

Last year Hopoate, 27, narrowly avoided being sent to jail for domestic violence offences against his wife.
He pleaded guilty to seven offences, including two counts of common assault – domestic violence related and one count of common assault.
He was sentenced to a 12-month sentence to be served in the community by way of an intensive corrections order (ICO).
However Hopoate earlier this year breached the terms of his ICO and served three months in prison before his sentence expired.

Recently sacked NRL star Jamil Hopoate and his co-accused Leanne Belinda Mafoa will appear in court today charged over a large scale cocaine importation, after allegedly leading police on a daring daylight pursuit.

In 2014, Hopoate was jailed for at least one year for an unprovoked attack outside a Manly pub.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company.
He was sentenced to 18 months in jail with a one-year non-parole period.
Hopoate played 12 games for the Brisbane Broncos before he was let go at the end of the 2020 season and failed to earn a contract with another club.
MORE TO COME.

No mention of his Manly connections is a surprise, I thought for sure they would continue with the Manly bashing under the current issues at the club.

It says more to come at the bottom of that article.

The SMH article mentions he was sacked by Manly after his first assault conviction.

The Tragic choices we make in our lives
and the tragic consequences that come with our choices ......

Before being escorted away by police officers, Hopoate hugged his tearful partner Shea Beathe, kissed his young daughter and said "I love you" to family members who were in court.

I wish we could erase this surname from any discussions at Manly. Imagine what harm this **** can do to kids if on the street.

All his supporters screaming “See you soon” and “love you bra”. They wouldn't feel that way if their own kid wiped themselves out with this crap. There no love in what is going on among these people it is scheer greed, narcissism and delusion.

What happened to humanity?

We still have one in the juniors system as far as I know.

Sad. Sad because this kid could have been a pretty decent first grader and to have made a decent life for himself. Rather than being adulated, he is now dismissed. A nobody. He really never learned from his first offending behaviour. He's now sent his life down the toilet. Football career finished before it even got started. A shame, but then one must be responsible for on'e actions. He's paid the price of some very foolish decisions and no doubt associations. Still its sad.

Delusion, sure, probably.

But long-term drug, alcohol and gambling addictions can easily leave you owing money to people you don't want to cross.
A corrupt system provides opportunity, and there are plenty who are desperate enough or reckless enough to take the odds. And when I say odds, most don't get caught, and most who do, such as J Hoppa, are well down the chain in terms of running the show. Mr Big he aint.

Well the biggest crime in all this was his Co accused ever

thinking it was ok to wear that. Forget 3 years. She needs an intervention.
