Already without Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Mitchell Pearce, the Roosters have been dealt another blow with Michael Jennings facing a one-game ban.

Jennings was handed a grade one careless high tackle charge for his hit on Brisbane's Darius Boyd. He will miss a game even with an early guilty plea unless he proves his innocence.

We are flatliners unless we beat the Roosters by 20 and Saints lose to GC.
Given Saints have always hated Manly and GC are in no mood to help Manly out after we stole Cherry back I'll watch with amusement and see what happens.
Saints are crap though and couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag, so you never know. It's about time some upsets happened to other teams.

Obviously the MRC ruled he could fit a newspaper under his arm so therefore contact with the jaw is irrelevant.

Very true, it just isn't working and makes the whole Salary cap just a set of rules to bypass.

The problem is TPA's. Some clubs have it much better than others either because they are the only team in town (Brisbane) or have higher profile business contacts in Sydney where the competition for sponsorship is harder (Souffs and Rorters).

If clubs were only allowed to pay players what they actually signed for and the salary cap was strictly abided by the competition might be a hell of a lot closer and some of the financially struggling clubs wouldn't always be at the bottom end of the ladder.

The salary cap was originally brought in to keep player payments down to a reasonable level so they wouldn't start going the way of soccer or any of the pro-sports in the US like baseball, basketball and the NFL (though the SL saga blew that out of the water). It was also brought in to try and make it a level playing field so that the richer clubs couldn't pay 'overs' and stack their teams with the star players. Unfortunately TPA's have badly diluted the original intent of the cap.

I think it's time for a major review of the cap / TPA's.

We can all see it's broken and makes it extremely unfair on probably 12-13 clubs of the 16.

IMO the whole idea of third party deals were to keep the superstars from going to Rugby ( or now the NFL), if that's the case then the number of TPA's need to be reduced to say a maximum of 2 per club, and these can only say contribute half of the players salary.

Let's say Money Bill wants 1.5 million a year, well you can have him but he costs 750k from your cap.

If you also want Jaryd Hayne and he wants 2 million, then 1 million of that from your cap.

AND, that's it, even if you can get more TPA money you can't use it.

This isn't thinking long and hard about it but with the cap increasing in 2018 significantly the reliance on TPA's should be able to be decreased .

That will stop the likes of the Rorters loading their side with the best players , all on third party deals the rest of the clubs can only dream of.

Mark the bigger issue is the potential restraint of trade action which players could bring against the NRL. As it is the salary cap has the potential to be challenged in court however TPA's are a way to work around this

Should just have a panel of 96 ex players and 8 NRL appointed Raters that are selected every year at random. Get an official to visit 4 of them during each round of the season and get each of them to rate both the NRL players and the Holden Cup players from 1 to 10. 1 being a new unknown to 10 being superstar. Get the average rating at the end of each season and when that player is up for a new contract his average rating over his last contract is his rating value.

Kieran Foran
Yearly rating from the 104 surveyed over 3 yrs excluding current year = 2013 (9) 2014 (8)
Average over last contract = 8.5
Justin Horo
Yearly = 2013 (6) 2014 (4)
Average = 5

Then the NRL comes up with that magic figure of the total points you can have for each club. pay the players whatever you want it all goes off points.

I bet there is a million different ways to do it, but they need to pick one and run with it.
